Straight Life

LP (Item 545865) Galaxy, 1979 — Condition: Near Mint-

Features Art Pepper on alto, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – on titles that include "Surf Ride", "Make A List", "Nature Boy", "Straight Life", and "September Song".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light surface wear and some light fading along the spine.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Contemporary, 1977. Near Mint-
A rather late recording for Pepper, but a great one played with some fierceness that you might not expect from the date of the recording. It helps that he's accompanied by a remarkable rhythm section of George Cables, George Mraz and Elvin Jones, all seasoned vets by this point, and playing with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Savoy, 1952. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Some of the best Art Pepper work you'll ever find! This 2LP set is filled with tracks that were originally cut for Savoy Records during the time of Art's Surf Ride album for that label, but which were lost on the cutting room floor for years. Pepper's tone is fantastic – with more of an ... LP, Vinyl record album
Jazzland, 1961. Very Good
A killer set of grooves from vibes legend Johnny Lytle – one of the first and one of the few to ever combine vibes with Hammond organ – in this case, the work of Milt Harris on the keys! The group is a very rhythmic trio, thanks to Harris on the bass pedals, and Penny Hinant on the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1977. Near Mint-
Seminal work from bassist Teruo Nakamura – one of the few Japanese fusion players of the 70s to make a bit of a splash over on this side of the Pacific, thanks to wickedly soulful work like this! Teruo's getting some great help here from a handful of American players – including the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Colpix, Early 60s. Very Good+
A great chapter in 60s bossa jazz – Zoot Sims "answer" to Stan Getz's bossa work on Verve – recorded in a similar jazz-meets-bossa style, with some great guitar work by Jim Hall! Zoot's solos are a bit tighter and not as laidback as Stan's – giving a more jazz-based ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Cobham

Funky Thide Of Sings
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint-
Billy Cobham's always got something funky going on in his music – and this 70s classic for Atlantic Records has the drummer at the height of his powers – really mixing together jazz, rock, and funk impulses – all without some of the overindulgence of his more jamming records of ... 1970s reissue of Bird's incomparable Dial sides, cut during the height of the Bop age. Hank Crawford

I Hear A Symphony
Kudu, 1975. Near Mint-
Not really a symphony, but a great album that features the soulful alto sax of Hank Crawford blowing over some rich larger backings from David Matthews – all with a sweetly funky Kudu sound! The style's a bit more polished than some of the other Kudu sessions of the time – almost a bit ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Mitchell

African Violet
ABC/Impulse, 1977. Near Mint-
Sweet electric funk from Blue – recorded in a warm, largely arranged style that's reminiscent of the best Freddie Hubbard fusion work from the 70s – but which has an even tighter sound overall! The groove is great – kind of a Kudu Records vibe, and Blue's actually quite good in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pat Metheny

American Garage
ECM, 1979. Near Mint-
A brilliantly evocative album from Pat Metheny – one that's got a quietly epic feel, as Pat and group soar out across the American landscape in a set of tunes that subtly explore space and sound while still remaining wonderfully fluid. There's nothing forced here, and nothing too slick ... LP, Vinyl record album
