A treasure trove of bebop – all the early recordings made by Sonny Stitt for Prestige Records, finally compiled into one comprehensive set! The recordings here span only a period of 4 years, but there's a lifetime's worth of great music in the grooves – key sides that helped define the bop idiom at the end of the 40s – and push a new level of expression into the music. Stitt's always been one of those players who never gets his due as strongly as Bird, Miles, Diz, and others from the time – but hearing these tracks, there's an amazing amount of depth to the music – a careful sense of emotion one minute, searing burst of soul the next, and nascent modernism after that. The package mends years of scattered releases of these tracks – and finally brings together all these early recordings in one place, tied together even more firmly with liner notes by Harvey Pekar! All material is remastered, and package includes a handful of alternate takes along with the master versions – more than 70 titles in all, a real deal at this price!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(CONDITION NOTE: Cutout notch along spine of boxset and CD cases.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Atlantic (Japan), 1966. Used
A heck of a great little record – one that shouldn't work so well, but it does! For the set, Sonny Stitt's blowing in front of a larger brass section – and while the prospect of a Sonny Stitt big band record might not sound that great at first, this one really kicks, largely because of ... CD

Now!
Impulse (Japan), 1963. Used
A tight swinger from Sonny Stitt – one of the standout 60s dates he recorded for the Impulse label, a place where he seemed to get even more care and focus in the studio! The record's got all the soulful swing of Stitt's classics for Roost, but also hits a slightly more lyrical groove at ... CD

Muse/32 Jazz, 1974. Used
Great straight work from the legendary Sonny Stitt – recording here in a mode that's different than his funky sides of the time – and a lot more back to basics! The group's a quintet – as Sonny blows both tenor and alto, with help from Joe Newman on trumpet, Duke Jordan on piano, ... CD

Soul Classics
Prestige/OJC, Mid/Late 60s. Used
A nice collection pulled together in the 80s by Fantasy from Stitt's organ-based sessions, that has a cool rolling groove throughout that you don't always find in some of his more bop-oriented sides. Sidemen include Jack McDuff, Don Patterson, Grant Green, Billy James and others, with 9 numbers in ... CD

Personal Appearance
Verve, 1957. Used
One of the sublime 50s classics that Sonny Stitt recorded for Verve Records – all albums of understated beauty, and with a sense of perfection that's still hard to match all these many years later! And although there's a similarity to the records, each also has a bit of a difference too ... CD

Dexter Gordon

Jumpin Blues
Prestige/OJC, 1970. Used
An unusual one from the Dexter's early 70s years – a US session cut with a tighter format than some of Gordon's imports, in a mode that kind of recalls his best Blue Note work of the 60s! The group on the set features Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums – ... CD
