V-8 Ford Blues

LP (Item 544474) Columbia, 1966 — Condition: Very Good
Classic work from one of the hippest jazz singers of all time – and a hell of a pianist too! Mose Allison began his recording career laying down piano on jazz sessions for Stan Getz and a few others – but here, he emerges as a fully-formed talent of his own – steeped in modes from the New Orleans scene, but also able to spin out his own uniquely hip approach – at a level that went onto have a huge influence on later generations of singers – from Dr John to Georgie Fame to Paul Weller – as well as the UK mod scene of the 60s! This album's one of a few that Allison cut for Epic Records, which are among some of our favorites – and titles include "Baby Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone", "Back On The Corner", "Mad With You", "Life Is Suicide", "I Love The Life I Live", and "Ask Me Nice".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A later repackaging of the excellent Flying High album – easily the group's best album by far, and unfortunately, too often the toughest one to find! Frankie
Columbia, 1940s. Very Good
Frank Sinatra's way more than just the teen idol you'd expect from the cover and title – and instead works here as a fully-formed singer who'd go on to forever change the role of adult male vocals in American music! An overlooked gem from Carmen – one of her few albums for Columbia from the 60s, and a wonderfully swinging small group session that's got a much more relaxed feel than some of her earlier sets! An excellent album of vocals by the great Joe Williams! Joe's always been a fine singer, but with Basie, he really gets the backing he needs to do his work the best. And although this album isn't as authenico as it might be, it still comes from a time when Verve really knew how to handle singers ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sing Along With Basie
Roulette, 1958. Near Mint-
One of the more obscure albums by Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross – a session of Basie tunes, performed with backing by the Count, plus additional lead vocals by Joe Williams, the voice most closely associated with the Basie group at the time!
