Chicago & All That Jazz

LP (Item 544410) Verve, 1961 — Condition: Very Good+

Very cool material – recorded as a special date by old Chicago players, for an NBC TV show in the early 60s! Great recording quality – and in addition to Condon on guitar and Freeman on tenor, other players include Jimmy McPartland on trumpet, Pee Wee Russell on clarinet, Joe Sullivan on piano, and Jack Teagarden on trombone – plus Lil Armstrong and Blossom Seeley on vocals.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(MGM pressing.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A real treasure, and a record that may well be our favorite Jimmy Smith album for Verve – a masterful meeting of his smoking Hammond work with some swingingly sophisticated arrangements by Oliver Nelson and Claus Ogerman! Count Basie

April In Paris
Verve, 1955. Very Good+
One of Basie's biggest albums – but still a work of pure genius! "April In Paris" is one of the darkest jazz standards ever written, and it never sounded better than in this original version, which features that great ending in which Basie and the band stop, then start, then stop ... Verve, 1958. Near Mint-
Oscar Peterson works his magic on the score to My Fair Lady – giving the whole set of tunes a personal, intimate feel that takes them way past their Broadway roots – yet which also avoids sounding too much like Shelly Manne's session of the same name! Ostensibly simple stuff from Bill Evans, but pretty darn great – and a nice move into a more sophisticated vein than his earlier recordings! Gene Krupa

Krupa Rocks
Verve, Mid 50s. Very Good-
Well, not "rocks" – but Gene hits it nice and hard this time around – almost with an R&B sort of vibe at points, thanks to sharp tenor from Gail Curtis! LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Part 3 of a series of double LPs issued by Verve in the late 70s compiling his classic recordings for Verve under the direction of Norman Granz. Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson
Verve, 1959. Very Good+
Beautifully laidback blowing from the great Ben Webster – captured here in perfect late 50s formation, with wonderful rhythm support from the Oscar Peterson Trio!
