Magic

LP (Item 54417) Arista/GRP, 1981 — Condition: Very Good+

A key bit of jazz funk from trumpeter Tom Browne – still grooving strong here, with a sublime mix of modern soul, funky jazz, and some of the 80s groove touches that showed up on the best GRP titles from the time! The album's got a smooth compressed groove – kind of post-Donald Byrd, with Tom taking solos over the top of most tracks, and occasional vocals , wither from a backing group, or an assortment of different lead singers. Players on the set include Bernard Wright, Dave Grusin, Bobby Broom, and Marcus Miller – and tracks include "I Know", "Midnight Interlude", "Let's Dance", "Night Wind", "Making Plans", "Thighs Hihg", and "Magic".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch and lightly stained corner.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Tom Browne

Love Approach
GRP/Arista, 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold
An early gem from trumpeter Tom Browne – a set that not only firmly established Browne as one of the best young players of his generation, but which also paved the way for a whole new direction for jazz funk in the 80s! The record is a perfect example of how great the mix of R&B rhythms ... LP, Vinyl record album

Anthony Braxton

Five Pieces 1975
Arista, 1975. Very Good Gatefold
One of Braxton's best records for Arista, and a great quartet session that features Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, Dave Holland on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums. The playing is extremely tight, and Braxton and Wheeler trade very sharp solos, while Holland pulls these amazing lines out of his bass. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Warren Bernhardt

Manhattan Update
Arista, 1980. Near Mint-
Keyboardist Warren Bernhardt was always a key part of the fusion scene in the late 70s – but he was also a musician who was maybe a bit apart from it, too – as he would allow himself some more introspective moments than some of his contemporaries – even while turning out some ... Jeff Lorber Fusion

Wizard Island
Arista, 1980. Near Mint-
A real classic from Jeff Lorber – the kind of record that crossed-over immediately, and had a huge influence on so many different scenes! The style is smooth sweet fusion – of a sort that Lorber virtually helped invent, and so many others helped to ruin in later years – but here, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jeff Lorber Fusion

Galaxian
Arista, 1981. Near Mint-
The Jeff Lorber group makes a move into R&B with a few tracks on this set – adding in vocals to their core sweet fusion approach, but in a style that totally makes sense! Arista, 1984. Near Mint-
Sweet fusion grooving from Jeff Lorber – going strong here in a tight early 80s mode that combines jazz and R&B with effortless ease! Eleventh House with Larry Coryell

Level One
Arista, 1975. Near Mint-
A really heavily-jamming album from Larry Coryell's Eleventh House group – certainly to be expected, given that the lineup includes John Lee on bass, Mike Mandel on keyboards, and Alphonse Mouzon on drums! The sound has plenty of rock-fusion touches – and Coryell's guitar is searing, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brecker Brothers

Brecker Brothers
Arista, 1975. Very Good+

Dave Grusin

Out Of The Shadows
GRP, 1982. Near Mint-
Dave Grusin's definitely out of the shadows here – after years of session work, soundtrack music, and other arrangements – finally beginning to shine in the limelight as a jazz musician on his own! The set's got a nice sort of vibe – not the too-smooth later sound of the GRP ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Ensemble Of Chicago

Paris Session
Arista, 1969/1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nice 2LP set that brought the US some of the great recordings cut by the Art Ensemble while they were in Paris (some of which have also come out under the Black Lion imprint). All of the material was recorded in the Polydor Studios in Paris in 1969, and the tracks include "The Spiritual" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Arista, 1976. Very Good-
One of Braxton's first recordings of his work for larger ensembles, and a masterpiece that gives a good example of the kind of early ideas that have informed some of his recent work in the same style. The orchestras vary from track to track, but they all include excellent players like Roscoe ... LP, Vinyl record album

Afro Blues Quintet Plus One

New Directions
Mira, Late 60s. Very Good
Great work by one of the grooviest groups on the LA 60s scene! The Afro Blues Quintet have a blend of soul jazz and Latin styles that's similar to the best 60s work by Cal Tjader, or to records by small combos like the Quartette Tres Bien or The Latin Jazz Quintet.
