A feisty bit of jazz funk with a classic edge, great solo work from guitarist Rodney Jones – very much in the vein of some of the recent jamband titles on Blue Note. The group's a no-nonsense one with a lineup that includes Lonnie Smith on organ, Idris Muhammad on drums, Maceo Parker on alto, and Jones on guitar, jamming away like he's Melvin Sparks on some classic jazz funk set for Prestige! The production has a bit of a modern flourish, but the groove is very much in the pocket – and the album includes a nice remake of "Soul Makossa", plus the tracks "Groove Bone part 1", "Soul Eyes", "One Turnip Green", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Soup Bone", and "Soul Manifesto". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
