CD

Late 60s greatness from Pepper Adams – an overlooked session that's easily one of his most standout sides of the decade! There's an easygoing swing to the record that's simply wonderful – a well-blown sound that's never too overthought or academic – just pure proof of the sort of inroads that Pepper Adams made with the baritone sax back in the 50s, as he liberated the instrument from its work in the chorus to a fully-voiced solo instrument of its own! The other players certainly help contribute to the magic of the date – and in addition to a rhythm section that includes Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, the set also features Zoot Sims on tenor, blowing with a tone that's almost as deep as Adams! Titles include "Cindy's Tune", "I've Just Seen Her", "Serenity", "Inanout", "Punjab", "Elusive", and "Verdandi".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Prestige/OJC, 1968. Used
Fantastic! This is one of Sonny Criss' masterworks, and an amazing tribute to the LA jazz underground of the 60's! Horace Tapscott composed and arranged all of the tracks on here, and they form a beautiful, soulful, suite that gives Criss a perfect backdrop for his meaningful solos. The work is ... CD

Frank Wess & John Coltrane

Wheelin' & Dealin'
Prestige/OJC, Late 50s. Used
One of the great Prestige jam session sides, featuring a host of their great players – Coltrane, Mal Waldron, Paul Quinichette, Art Taylor, and Wess – running through some long tracks in fairly free form. Deep, slow grooving, and with lots of nice solos. 4 tracks, and all of them long. ... CD

Gigi Gryce & The Jazz Lab Quintet

Gigi Gryce & The Jazz Lab Quintet
Riverside/OJC, 1957. Used
Hard to find Riverside LP of this group led by Gigi Gryce running down nice hard bop numbers. There's no dry academic performances here, not that you'd guess that from the line-up, but the title kind of leads you in that direction. Donald Byrd and Gryce are playing nice and hard up front, with ... CD

Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used
Teddy Edwards at his best – set up in a simple group that lets the album focus on his tremendous tone and well-chosen solo formations! The album's got a subtle brilliance that's evident from the very first note – a way of putting Teddy over that's never forced, but which also has a lot ... CD

Jerome Richardson

Roamin' With Richardson
Prestige/New Jazz, 1958. Used
Wide-roaming grooves from the great Jerome Richardson – a player who's done countless dates in later groups, but hardly ever gets to shine as a leader! On this excellent Prestige session, Jerome's stepping out in some long, open-ended tracks that are a great change from the usual – ... CD

Cannonball Adderley

Inside Straight
Fantasy/OJC, 1973. Used
One of Cannonball Adderley's late funky sessions for Fantasy – and a record that still features some mighty heavy production from David Axelrod! The album's got that core groove that Axe and Cannon first crafted together at Capitol in the 60s – but the sound here has some definite 70s ... CD

Duke Pearson

Dedication!
Prestige/OJC, 1961. Used
A rare pre-Blue Note gem from pianist Duke Pearson – originally recorded in 1961 for the short-lived Jazzline label! The set appears here in a short-lived 1969 incarnation from Prestige – issued, no doubt, to cash in on Pearson's growing fame at Blue Note – and the record's a ... CD

Art Blakey

Caravan
Riverside/OJC, 1962. Used
One of the best non-Blue Note sessions from Art Blakey in the 60s – a really searing set that features the sextet lineup of the Jazz Messengers – a group that's filled with legends who include Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Reggie Workman ... CD
Prestige, 1965. Used
Fantastic material by Chet Baker – a series of selections recorded for Prestige Records after his return from Europe – done with a lot more bite than his 50s material! The group here is very hip – George Coleman on tenor, Kirk Lightsey on piano, Herman Wright on bass, and Roy ... CD
