❔
A 2 LP career retrospective of Marvin Gaye's recordings with Motown – one that doesn't try to be a greatest hits or fully comprehensive – but rather dedicates a side of each LP to different themes as approached by Marvin! Side 1 is subtitled "Crossroads" and features "After The Dance (inst)", "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and "Loving & Affection". Side 2 goes a bit further, calling itself "A Parting of the Ways" and has some classic breakup songs: "When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You?" and a live version of "Distant Lover". Side 3 is love songs, entitled "A Witness to Love" and features "That's the Way Love Is", "Lonely Lover" and "The End of Our Road". Finally side 4 covers the reflective side of Marvin, called "Introspection" and features a version of "The Star Spangled Banner" unavailable elsewhere, and "Save the Children" and "Wholy Holy". A great collection that's thoughtfully put together and plays really well front-to-back.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeves. Cover has light wear, but looks great overall.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Marvin Gaye

Romantically Yours
Columbia, 1985. Near Mint-
A unique posthumous release from Marvin Gaye – one that focuses mostly on his talents with ballads and standards, and which stands in stark contrast to some of his more sex-heavy work of the 80s! All of the material predates the 1985 release of the record – and some appears to be from ... LP, Vinyl record album

David Ruffin

In My Stride
Motown, 1977. Very Good+
Later Motown work from David Ruffin, but still pretty darn great – thanks to vocals that rise to the top, no matter what the tune! The album was co-produced by Van McCoy and Charles Kipps, with arrangements by McCoy – but the overall sound is light years away from some of Van's poppier ... LP, Vinyl record album

Motown, 1985. Very Good+
A stone classic from that great early 80s run by DeBarge – that time when they were really reinventing the group soul sound for a new generation, finding a way to bring back older sweet soul modes, but with a very different twist! Bonnie Pointer

Bonnie Pointer (1978)
Motown, 1978. Very Good+
A great Motown set from the 70s – a record that grooves with the new styles the label was exploring at the time, yet still has a rock-solid quality that links back to its 60s heritage too! The main strength here comes from Bonnie Pointer – whose vocals have an instantly classic sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Commodores

Hot On The Tracks
Motown, 1976. Near Mint-
Early funk from the Commodores – back in the days when Lionel Richie could still get up and groove! We'll be the first to admit that we're sometimes put off by the group, given their later hits, but it's records like this that actually remind us how great they could be – a mixture of ... Jermaine Jackson

Feel The Fire
Motown, 1977. Near Mint-
Jermaine's going the way of most of Motown at this point – popping the bass pretty heavily, and grooving in a smooth funky mode. The cuts that go too over the top with the funky stuff definitely lose us – but there's a few decent mellow soul tracks that redeem the album, and which keep ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lionel Richie

Lionel Richie
Motown, 1982. Very Good+ Gatefold
