Musical Testament 1964 to 1984

LP (Item 54349) Motown, 1960s/1970s/Early 80s — Condition: Very Good+
2LP
A 2 LP career retrospective of Marvin Gaye's recordings with Motown – one that doesn't try to be a greatest hits or fully comprehensive – but rather dedicates a side of each LP to different themes as approached by Marvin! Side 1 is subtitled "Crossroads" and features "After The Dance (inst)", "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and "Loving & Affection". Side 2 goes a bit further, calling itself "A Parting of the Ways" and has some classic breakup songs: "When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You?" and a live version of "Distant Lover". Side 3 is love songs, entitled "A Witness to Love" and features "That's the Way Love Is", "Lonely Lover" and "The End of Our Road". Finally side 4 covers the reflective side of Marvin, called "Introspection" and features a version of "The Star Spangled Banner" unavailable elsewhere, and "Save the Children" and "Wholy Holy". A great collection that's thoughtfully put together and plays really well front-to-back.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeves. Cover has light wear, but looks great overall.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Marvin Gaye

Romantically Yours
Columbia, 1985. Near Mint-
A unique posthumous release from Marvin Gaye – one that focuses mostly on his talents with ballads and standards, and which stands in stark contrast to some of his more sex-heavy work of the 80s! All of the material predates the 1985 release of the record – and some appears to be from ... LP, Vinyl record album

Diana Ross

Ross (Motown)
Motown, 1978. Very Good+
Diana Ross in the sweet clubby 70s – working here in a set of upbeat groovers that really show off her talents as a disco diva! The tunes are mostly upbeat, and surprisingly fresh – not nearly as disco cliched as you might expect, and handled in just the right way to take advantage of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross

Diana & Marvin
Motown, 1973. Near Mint-
A surprisingly nice album – even if you're not a fan of Diana Ross! Given that Marvin and Diana are standing back to back on the front cover, we kind of get the idea that there wasn't as much sympathy in the session as on some of Marvin's classic duet sides from the 60s with Tammi Terrell ... Commodores

Natural High
Motown, 1978. Very Good+
A pivotal album for The Commodores – still very funky here, with a sound that stays true to their roots – yet also able to reach out into some of the mature mellow ballads that would make them a huge crossover act in years to come! James Carmichael arranges and produces here – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Can't Slow Down
Motown, 1983. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Lionel Richie's biggest records ever! Titles include "Can't Slow Down", "All Night Long", "Penny Lover", "The Only One", "Running With The Night", "Hello", "The Groove", "Love Will Find A Way" and "Stuck On ... LP, Vinyl record album

David Ruffin

In My Stride
Motown, 1977. Very Good+
Later Motown work from David Ruffin, but still pretty darn great – thanks to vocals that rise to the top, no matter what the tune! The album was co-produced by Van McCoy and Charles Kipps, with arrangements by McCoy – but the overall sound is light years away from some of Van's poppier ... LP, Vinyl record album
Motown, 1985. Very Good+
A stone classic from that great early 80s run by DeBarge – that time when they were really reinventing the group soul sound for a new generation, finding a way to bring back older sweet soul modes, but with a very different twist! The record's as strong as its predecessors, although slightly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Commodores

Hot On The Tracks
Motown, 1976. Near Mint-
Early funk from the Commodores – back in the days when Lionel Richie could still get up and groove! We'll be the first to admit that we're sometimes put off by the group, given their later hits, but it's records like this that actually remind us how great they could be – a mixture of ... World Pacific, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
A sweet album of funky guitar tracks, with Freddy Robinson out front over a bunch of tight LA Monk Higgins arrangements. Kind of a sleeper that hasn't really gotten as many props in the groove scene as it ought to, with a great sunny west coast 60s soul jazz vibe running throughout. Joe Sample ...
