We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Captain Beyond
Cotillion, 1972. Very Good+
A surprisingly great batch of kick ass rock and roll tunes – southern fried, but done with a cosmic undercurrent that makes for a mighty weird approach! The drums are amazing – fierce right from the get-go, in a way that has made the record a favorite with break collectors for years ... LP, Vinyl record album
Southwind
Venture, Late 60s. Good
A weird late 60s set from this California group – one that's got a rocking small combo feel at parts, but a partly rural sound too! The vibe's almost like some of the party groups that played the southern circuit in the 60s, but a bit more west coast too – never really psyche or fuzz, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Songs For A Tailor
Atco, 1969. Very Good+
A wild batch of jazz rock tunes – recorded by ex-Cream bassist Jack Bruce, along with a host of like-minded luminaries that include Chris Spedding, Harry Beckett, Dick Heckstall-Smith, and John Hisemann. Unlike Bruce's first solo album – Things We Like – which was an all-jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album
Volume 2
Reprise, 1968. Very Good
Second album by this great lost psyche band – with less covers, and a lot wilder songwriting. Tracks include "Queen Nymphet", "Tracy Had a Hard Day Sunday", "In the Arena", "Smell of Incense", and "Carte Blanche" – which supposedly they ... LP, Vinyl record album
MCA/Goldhawke, 1977. Very Good+
The second album by this hip funky rock combo – with a flanged out 70s groove that reminds us a bit of Average White Band, a bit of Hot Chocolate (the British group). The best cuts have funk in the forefront – with plenty of basswork and wah wah guitar. The rest of the album's more of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Kristyl
Guerssen (Spain), 1975. Near Mint- (reissue)
Melodic underground rock from the mid 70s Louisville, Kentucky scene – with some spaced out, slow building electric groove steeped in the psyche scene of years earlier, but also a nice way with melodies, harmonies that remind us a bit of things the Who were doing at that time (although ... Warner, 1980s. Sealed 4LP Box Set
First ever vinyl box set package of all the essential New Order singles – from their groundbreaking early years onward through the mid 00s – on a 4 X LP set! Black Pearl – Live!
Prophesy, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
Nice bit of rockin' funky soul by a band that we know little about, but who seem to be an LA rock band that's obsessed with soul music. The LP contains a great 11 minute version of "Cold Sweat", played with a lot of funky vamping by the band in a JB's style. There's also a nice version ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shame Shame
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint-
Almost a late British invasion group – and a pretty darn groovy one at that! The Magic Lanterns hail from the UK, but they've got a sound that's picked up some of the Sunshine pop and jazzier touches of the US pop scene in the late 60s – heard to great effect on the title hit "Sham ... Ars Nova (1968)
Elektra, 1968. Very Good Gatefold
A wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really a one-off group – known for only this rare gem, issued on Elektra in 1968 – but with a sound that perfectly summed up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here ... Abraxas
Columbia, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
In the past 30 years, this one's gone from being a fierce outpouring of the Bay Area underground, to a cliche of classic rock, to a brilliant example of west coast Latin rock/funk/fusion in action! Features a stellar cover of "Oye Como Va", plus "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen", ... LP, Vinyl record album
