❔

A great mix of heavy funk and sweeter ballads from the Isley Brothers – and a record that's filled with two-part tracks that really let them stretch out and groove! The tunes have a bit more bass and keyboards than before – an approach that's even more electric than Isley funk of a few years back, and which steps out in some tightly vamping rhythms that still crackle with plenty of warmth and soul – especially on the mellower numbers, which dominate side two of the record, and really make this one worth having! Mellow tracks include "For The Love Of You (parts 1 & 2)", "Sensuality (parts 1 & 2)", and "Make Me Say It Again (parts 1 & 2)" – and funkier numbers include "Fight The Power (parts 1 & 2)", "The Heat Is On (parts 1 & 2)", and "Hope You Feel Better Love (parts 1 & 2)".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a bumped corner.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Isley Brothers

Let's Go!
Stateside (UK), Early 60s. Near Mint-
Early early work by The Isley Brothers – recorded for United Artists in the early and mid 60s, in the years between their hit work for RCA and Motown. The material here leans heavily on the "Twist & Shout" sound of the RCA years – taking elements of R&B group styles, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isley Brothers

Go For Your Guns
T Neck/Columbia, 1977. Very Good Gatefold
A funky album – but one that we love best for the mellow tracks! Sure, the Isleys could wear flashy suits and play some heavy guitar – but honestly, what we really love them for here are the laidback, loving tunes they do so well. The album includes 2 of their greatest ballad tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isley Brothers

Grand Slam
T Neck, 1981. Near Mint-
Great work from The Isley Brothers – proof that they were still growing strongly as a group into the 80s! The Isleys are smoothing it out nicely here – going for that lean, compressed style that they used on more than a few nice records at the time. Tracks have a tight modern soul ... Isley Brothers

Inside You
T Neck, 1981. Very Good
A strong extension of the Isley Brothers' funky 70s style – moving into a more compressed mode that had been taking hold of the group's style over the past few albums – giving them a smoother finish in the end, but one that actually brings out a deeper level of soul in the music! The ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, 1972. Very Good+
A monster from start to finish – not only the greatest album from War, but maybe one of the greatest mainstream funk albums of all time! The set's got a really unique groove – one that so many others tried to copy, but which was forged here first – in a wicked LA blend of Chicano ... LP, Vinyl record album

Faze-O

Good Thang
Atlantic, 1978. Very Good+
A definite good thang from Faze-O – easily the masters of snakey funk at the end of the 70s! The set's got loads of great elements that echo the group's Riding High debut – a groove that never goes too far over the top, and which kicks back at a pace that so many others would copy a ... RCA, 1973. Very Good+
Although this set was recorded early in the history of the Main Ingredient's career, it also compiles tracks from their strongest period – which means that nearly every track's a winner, and all are graced by smooth uptown soul arrangements by Bert DeCoteaux. Includes their seminal AM radio ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Simon

Power Of Simon
Spring, 1973. Very Good+
An album that combined tracks that Joe had cut as singles for the Spring label, mostly in the south, but a few on the east coast – with production either by Simon and John Richbourg, or by the Gamble/Huff team in Philly. Titles include "Step By Step", "Drowning In The Sea Of ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1978. Very Good+
This Dells LP was cut around the time ABC was having some great luck with the Detroit soul of The Dramatics – so they brought the Dells over to Detroit to record, with production work by the likes of Al Perkins, George Clinton, and Eli Fontaine. The tunes have a smoother approach than the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Olympic Runners

Dancealot
Polydor, 1979. Very Good+
A bit later than classic vintage for these guys – but still pretty darn nice! The sound's a bit smoother and more aimed at the club than before, but Olympic Runners also still retain their talent for tight funk-inspired grooves – often inflected with some really nice instrumental ... Prince

Lovesexy
Paisley Park, 1988. Very Good+
It's the late 80s and after the decision to keep the Black album in the can, Prince gives us Lovesexy. Not his finest moment, but far from his weakest, with more than a couple nice numbers like "Alphabet Street", "Lovesexy", "When 2 R In Love" and "Anna ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ear Wax/Wonderland, Late 70s. Sealed
An obscure little funky group from Flint, Michigan, one with a tight ensemble sound that's very much in the Earth Wind & Fire mode – complete with a really great horn section, plenty of bass-heavy grooves a the bottom, and a relatively spiritual feel that comes through strongly on the ...
