LP, Vinyl record album

✈
❔
A late 70s live set from space jazz/jazz rock guitar guru Jan Akkerman – rolling from spacious, sparely haunting atmospherics to tighter, sax and keys punctuated fusion jams! This live set was his Atlantic followed up his self titled album, and it grooves in similar territory – not as reliant on the more rocking side of his sound, but hardly lacking in spacey dynamics – with more of a fusiony jazz funk vibe in the busier arrangements. Players include Jasper Van't Hoff and Willem Ennes on keys, Cess Van Der Laarse on bass, Tom Barlage on sax, Bruno Castelucci on drums, and Neppie Noya on percussion. Titles include "Transitory", "Skydancer", "Pavane", "Crackers", "Tommy" and "Azimuth".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(US pressing. Cover is bent a bit at the bottom right corner.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jan Akkerman

Tabernakel
Atco, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
Guitarist Jan Akkerman bridges many worlds here – deftly stepping between spare acoustic guitar modes and some much more dynamic electric ones – but all with a sense of care and vision that really makes the record come together! The set begins with a few themes from John Dowland, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jan Akkerman

Jan Akkerman
Atlantic, 1978. Very Good+
A very different album than usual from Jan Akkerman – but in a really nice way! The album's not nearly as guitar-heavy and rock-leaning as some of Jan's other sets from the 70s – and has a bubbling sort of soul-based finish, one that's arranged by Akkerman with some help from Mike ... Max Roach

Drums Unlimited
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
The drums are certainly unlimited here – and the album's a really unique one, in that it shows Max Roach in 2 different settings – one with a group, and one that's simply solo! One batch of tracks has Max in the company of a tight group of soul jazz players like Freddie Hubbard, Roland ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Art Of The Improvisers
Atlantic, Early 60s/1970. Very Good+
Great lost work from Ornette Coleman – material recorded in New York and LA during the years 1959 through 1961 – never issued at the time, but pulled together in this wonderful package at the start of the 70s! Although not recorded as an official album, the record stands easily with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Cobham

Crosswinds
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
A masterful album from Billy Cobham – and maybe the best 70s record to really demonstrate the unique place he found for himself in 70s fusion! The album soars with a sound that really lives up to its cover image – but it's also not the heavy-jamming affair of some of Billy's more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shorty Rogers

Swinging Mr Rogers
Atlantic, 1955. Very Good+
A standout set from Shorty – tightly arranged numbers performed by a quartet that includes Jimmy Giuffre, Pete Jolly, Curtis Counce, and Shelly Manne – all working with Shorty in perfect west coast form! Despite the length of the tunes, the overall feel is similar to Rogers' excellent ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Third Stream Music
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good+
A seminal album that defined the fresh sound of a whole new generation in jazz – that "third stream" movement that was different from the cool jazz of the west coast, and the fire of New York! The style here follows that same mix of jazz and higher-concept elements you'd hear on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1965. Near Mint-
A stone classic from Roland Kirk – and a record that beautifully balances his modern ideas and playful energy – as you might guess from the title! While posing as the "whistleman", Roland's also pushing the boundaries of jazz a few steps forward too – not just in modern ... LP, Vinyl record album

Les McCann & Eddie Harris

Swiss Movement
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+
The extremely successful union of two of Atlantic's biggest funky jazz stars, caught live in Switzerland, with the amazing Benny Bailey sitting in on trumpet. The tracks are long and funky, and are virtually a blueprint for pop soul jazz playing of the time – mixing slinky rhythms with some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson

Plenty, Plenty Soul
Atlantic, 1957. Near Mint-
Plenty plenty soul here – as Milt Jackson's moving away from the Modern Jazz Quartet, and working with a great group of players that really expand his sound! The session's a bit like some of Milt's soul jazz work for Riverside and other labels – in that it's got rhythms, timings, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
