A beautifully soulful record from Flora Purim – still awash with touches from her Brazilian roots, but also done with a great 70s LA sound! Airto's helping Flora out on production, but the real hero here is Michel Colombier – who handles most of the arrangements and wrote a good deal ... LP, Vinyl record album
A very unusual bit of bossa nova – and a record that seems to criss-cross a few different A&M Records modes of the 60s! At one level, the group's got a Brasil 66 feel – since they use a female vocal chorus on some cuts, breezing along with the grooves in a style that's definitely ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of Flora Purim's 70s classics – an album recorded with that soaring breezy vocal style that she virtually invented – heard here before it got too old, and too copied by other singers! The set's a live one, filled with lots of energy – and recorded before a very enthusiastic ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pure vocal magic – featuring the lovely Flora Purim at the height of her California powers – working in a sublime mix of jazz, fusion, and Brazilian rhythms – a sound that she virtually invented! The group on the set is one of her greatest of the time – with players that ... LP, Vinyl record album
A great early 80s set from Gilberto Gil – and one that has him fully assuming the soul singer mode that would carry him strongly through the rest of the decade! There's still a samba soul sense of funk at the core, but the overall instrumentation is a bit fuller and more electric – a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Really great late work from Elis Regina – recorded in the company of arranger Cesar Mariano, whose masterful touch made for some of Elis' best albums of the 70s! Cesar arranged and conducted here, and although the production is perhaps a bit more contemporary than Elis' work for Philips, the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Known world-round for his classic work with Sergio Mendes and Weather Report, percussionist Dom Um Romao is one of the greatest Brazilian musicians of all time, and this compilation of 1976 recordings for Pablo has him playing in a nice raw groove. The tracks have a beautifully jazzy sound, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of the funkiest albums Sergio Mendes ever recorded – a monster of a record that's filled with enough dancefloor groovers to have had a big impact on the soul market in the US! There's still elements of the older Mendes modes – especially in the way the vocals float nicely through ... LP, Vinyl record album
Excellent work from Ivan Lins' best period! The record captures him at a perfect point – when he was honing his songwriting to an incredibly precise style that would match the best work of Milton Nascimento or Lo Borges, but before he's gotten a bit too slickly produced. This record ... LP, Vinyl record album
A very cool Brazilian rock group from the early 70s – one who step out here with some touches that almost remind us more of French rock from the time than the usual MPB – and some groovy psychedelic modes as well! Arrangements can be full – a mix of strings interlaced with ... LP, Vinyl record album
An incredible later meeting by two of the most sophisticated musical talents of the bossa generation – and a record that's done in the same intimate, spare setting as Jobim's meeting with Elis Regina a few years before! Production is by bossa legend Aloysio De Oliveira – and the sound ... LP, Vinyl record album
