Best Of Mose Allison

LP (Item 540459) Atlantic, Late 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
Also available
Mose Allison — Best Of Mose Allison ... CD 3.99

(Later Warner Communications pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good
A strange title, but the record's a pretty nice collection of Mose Allison's early work for Prestige – a collection that focuses only on his instrumental work as a pianist, and doesn't include any of his better-known vocals! Mose is a pretty great talent on the keys, and these tracks have ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Harris

Instant Death
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good
Damn great work from the amazing Eddie Harris – a record that's got a perfect blend of jazz and funk, but still holds onto more righteous elements too! Eddie's using his electric sax in a really great way – not as a gimmick at all, but as a way of linking both the soulful and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1955. Near Mint-
A standout set from Shorty – tightly arranged numbers performed by a quartet that includes Jimmy Giuffre, Pete Jolly, Curtis Counce, and Shelly Manne – all working with Shorty in perfect west coast form! Despite the length of the tunes, the overall feel is similar to Rogers' excellent ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

Latin Fever
Atlantic, 1964. Near Mint-
Herbie Mann's got Latin fever – and it makes for one heck of a great 60s album! The vibe here is more bossa nova than the New York Latin of the time – but that's OK with us, because Mann's flute is perfect in the setting – and really sparkles here on the album's tracks that were ... Atlantic, 1950s/1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
We constantly find ourselves going back and forth: do we dig the Atlantic Trane, the Impulse Trane, or the Prestige Trane sides more? They each represent significant periods in both his and jazz in general's development, and all are so burning in their own way. This nice compilation brings ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yusef Lateef

10 Years Hence
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A spacious mid 70s set from Yusef Lateef – with some numbers showing his more soaringly spiritual bent – and others hewing towards a more bluesy or loosely funky vein. Tracked live in San Francisco, some numbers were later augmented with overdubbed strings and vocals – there's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Great Paris Concert
Atlantic, 1963. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Did Ellington ever record in concert and it not be great? This wonderful double-length set from the 60s is key proof of his genius in an unfettered live setting – recorded in Paris in 1963 with plenty of dark edges! The tracks are short overall, but Duke's really at the head of the group on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Smith

Sermon!
Blue Note, Early 60s. Near Mint-
One of the Jimmy Smith "jam session" Blue Notes, with a large group that includes Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, George Coleman, Tina Brooks, and Art Blakey – nearly all of whom take long solos and dig deep to compete with each other. 3 long tracks, "The Sermon", "JOS&quo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Earland

Smokin'
Muse, 1977. Near Mint-
Killer work by Charles Earland – a back to basics set of grooving tunes that are cut in the best soul jazz mode of earlier years! Earland heads a great group that includes Jimmy Ponder on guitar, George Coleman on tenor, and Walter Perkins on drums – and the set swings high, wide, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Howard Roberts

Guilty!!
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Fantastic album of funky guitar tracks by this underrated player. Despite a cheesy Capitol cover, the groove on here is nice and hard, and Roberts guitar is backed by some great organ lines played by a young Dave Grusin. An unexpected place to dig up some nice breaks, like on the version of " ... LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver

Trio Sides
Blue Note, 1950s/1960s/1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Blue Note double LP that compiles every single trio recording that Horace Silver did for the label. The range of material runs from 1952 up through 1968, and although all the stuff was released previously, this set's just about the only way you can really focus on Horace's work in this type of ...
