Best Of Mose Allison

LP (Item 540459) Atlantic, Late 60s — Condition: Very Good

(Later Warner Communications pressing. Cover has a split spine.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint-
A strange title, but the record's a pretty nice collection of Mose Allison's early work for Prestige – a collection that focuses only on his instrumental work as a pianist, and doesn't include any of his better-known vocals! Mose is a pretty great talent on the keys, and these tracks have ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mose Allison

Down Home Piano
Prestige, 1958. Very Good
An all-instrumental set from Mose Allison – one that drops out his familiar jazz vocals, and really brings a nice focus to his energy on the keys of the piano! Given that Mose really got his start as a sideman in other combos during the 50s, the selection's no surprise – and if you've ... LP, Vinyl record album

David Newman

Fathead Comes On
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
Early work from David Fathead Newman – so early, the cover has him listed as "Dave" on the front! The album steps nicely off Newman's early work with Ray Charles – and does plenty to establish him as a leader on his own – putting Newman's bold, soulful tenor right ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson & John Coltrane

Bags & Trane
Atlantic, 1959. Near Mint-
An incredible collaboration from John Coltrane and Milt Jackson – and one that gives Milt one of his sharpest records ever! The setting is relatively straight – tenor from Coltrane, vibes from Jackson – plus rhythm from Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Connie Kay ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yusef Lateef

Hush 'N' Thunder
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+
A moody set of 70s work from Yusef – proof that he was always trying to push his bag, and a good attempt to bridge his earlier exotic work and his later high concept compositions. Some of this material is spare and thoughtful, while other tracks are trying for sort of a 70's electric funk ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Harris

Free Speech
Atlantic, 1970. Near Mint-
Often overlooked, but a nice little record from Eddie's early electric period on Atlantic! The group is a very soulful one made up of Jodie Christian on electric piano, Louis Spears on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Felix Henry on percussion. The overall sound is more restrained than some of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Phineas Newborn

Here Is Phineas
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good+
Classic early work by Phineas Newborn – and a record cut right after his emergence from the great Memphis scene of the 1950s! Most of the album features trio material – cut with Kenny Clarke on drums and Oscar Pettiford on bass – but a few tracks also feature some very nice ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint-
A great early album by this famous 70s bassist – originally issued as the album Infinite Search on Embryo, but expanded here with the additional track "Cerecka". One of the greatest moments ever from bassist Miroslav Vitous – a very cool album recorded for the trippy Vortex ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1960s/Early 70s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A nice assortment of some of Roland Kirk's greatest recordings – his amazing sides for Atlantic Records, where he really developed his sense of "Black Classical Music" – and expanded his jazz leanings into a whole new realm of expression! The work on the set is beyond compare ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

European Concert Vol 1
Atlantic, 1960. Near Mint-
Volume 1 of a double-length live set from the legendary Modern Jazz Quartet – recorded in Scandinavia in 1960, almost as a summation of the group's growing genius in the 50s! The tunes are a mix of John Lewis and Milt Jackson originals, plus other songs all given the wonderful MJQ twist ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

Turtle Bay
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+
Sweet 70s funk from the great Herbie Mann – a tight small combo set done with plenty of electric touches! Side one, the "up side", features a core combo that's really great – Pat Rebillot on organ and electric piano, David Spinozza on guitar, Jerry Jemmott on bass, Reggie ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
Important mid 60s work from Ornette – and one of the few recordings of this format to see larger release at the time! The set captures Ornette in a much freer style than heard on his Atlantic recordings from a few years before – paying alto, violin, and trumpet, in a trio with David ... LP, Vinyl record album
