Chick Webb – A Legend Vol 1 – 1929 to 1936

LP (Item 540321) Decca, Early 30s — Condition: Very Good+
Includes work with The Jungle Band and with Webb's orchestra, with featured soloists that include Benny Carter, Taft Jordan, Sandy Williams, and Elmer Williams.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(60s maroon label stereo pressing. Cover has a small split on the spine and some aging on the back.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Westlake College Quintet

College Goes To Jazz
Decca, 1956. Very Good+
A hipper group than you'd expect – especially since they're all college kids! John Graas found these guys playing at Westlake College, and he rightly thought they had a sound that was well worth recording for Decca – not surprising, since these guys have a similar chamber modern groove ... Paul Quinichette

Jazz Studio 1
Decca, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
The first and loosest of the Jazz Studio series from the 50s – an quite possibly the most Verve-like too. This set's got a very open-ended jam session feel – with a group that include Paul Quinichette and Frank Foster on tenor, Hank Jones on piano, Benny Green on trombone, Joe Newman ... LP, Vinyl record album
Decca, 1947. Near Mint-
One of the few albums to really get at the genius of the Lionel Hampton group at the height of their powers – their crowd-pleasing antics that were always a big draw for live audiences! This set catches Hamp and a great group at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium – playing on long tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Love Supreme
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Timeless, 1979. Sealed
Really great work from pianist Joanne Brackeen – a player who's always got plenty to offer, but who really seems to find a special space here – working in a unique trio that features Clint Houston on bass and Ryo Kawasaki on guitar! Houston's bass is wonderful – full, rich, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Grant Green

Born To Be Blue
Blue Note, 1962. Near Mint-
A rare one from Grant Green – recorded in 1962, but not issued until this first pressing of the material, in 1985. The set's one of Green's early classics recorded with pianist Sonny Clark – a deeply soulful player who really had the right feel for Green's more lyrical soul jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tak Shindo

Brass & Bamboo
Capitol, 1959. Near Mint-
One of the best albums by Tak Shindo – a west coast Japanese composer/arranger who was one of the few exotica artists to actually have the cultural cred to the sound!
