JJ Johnson's playing with a great group that has an almost Jazz Messengers feel – probably because it includes Hank Mobley and Horace Silver, who push Johnson a lot harder than he's pushed on other records from the time. Titles include "Daylie Double", "Groovin", and ... LP, Vinyl record album
JJ takes a trip on the Broadway Express – serving up a host of great tunes pulled from shows, arranged with a very groovy flair by Mundell Lowe! Lowe makes the album sparkle with a bit more interest than the average session of this nature – adding in percussion, guitar, and other ... LP, Vinyl record album
A great small group session from trombonist JJ Johnson – a record that sets him up with a crack rhythm section, then really lets him open up on his solos! The approach is a great change from some of the more tightly arranged Johnson albums for Columbia – and is a great reminder of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of JJ's best from the late 50s – a tightly crackling hardbop set, recorded very much in the manner of his classic JJ Inc album! The sound here is a bit more compact overall – with some shorter tracks that really allow Johnson to display his keen sense of economy on his horn, while ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of JJ's hipper records from the time – featuring a quartet that includes Max Roach, Tommy Flanagan, and Paul Chambers. The strong rhythm section really drives JJ into some tight solos – and although the tracks are relatively short, he manages to get a heck of a lot into them. ... LP, Vinyl record album
First volume of the two LP set that compiled JJ's bop trombone sides for Blue Note. Great stuff, and arguably among some of his best work. The arrangements are tight, and JJ's in the company of great rhythm players like Kenny Clarke, Horace Silver, and Paul Chambers, who make the sessions really ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pretty darn nice stuff from McCoy Tyner, from a period when he was opening up to the soul jazz spiritualism that was around him – a movement that was clearly directly inspired by his work with Coltrane, but which also helped to shape his playing, and return the favor of influence. The group ... LP, Vinyl record album
Brilliant 70s work from McCoy Tyner – a post-Coltrane batch of spiritual soaring jazz tracks, played and written by the man who's got more right to the style than just about anyone else! Tyner's joined by a pretty strong batch of players – including reedmen Gary Bartz on soprano and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Features some great work by Joe Henderson on tenor – in a group that features Carter on bass and piccolo bass, Chick Corea on piano, and Tony Williams on drums – plus some surprisingly nice larger horn arrangements too. Titles include "GJT", "Gypsy", "Tinderbox& ... LP, Vinyl record album
An interesting concept record, with Konitz approaching a variety of material, much of it written by his collaborators, in wide open duet settings. Players include Jim Hall, Joe Henderson, Elvin Jones and Richie Kamuca, and on each piece, both Konitz and his companion have loads of room to ... LP, Vinyl record album
