We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Goodies
RCA, 1965. Very Good
One of the lesser-known JJ Johnson albums of the mid 60s – and nice little session that's done with a fresh sort of style! The album's got JJ playing mostly with larger arrangements – penned by Dick Hyman, Slide Hampton, and Billy Byaers – in modes that range from upbeat, mod, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1953. Very Good
Second volume of the two LP set that compiled JJ's bop trombone sides for Blue Note. Great stuff, and arguably among some of his best work. The arrangements are tight, and JJ's in the company of great rhythm players like Kenny Clarke, Horace Silver, and Paul Chambers, who make the sessions really ... LP, Vinyl record album
Milestone, 1980. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
McCoy Tyner's a hell of a piano player on his own, but in the post-Coltrane years he also developed an amazing talent for picking sidemen too – as you'll hear in this very unique set! The record features four different quartets – hence the title – each of which features a core ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great album from Shirley Scott – with some excellent arrangements by Gary McFarland! We've always felt that Shirley plays best when she's not leading the group – when someone else is handling the arrangements, so that she can groove mightily on her own – and this album is a ... Echoes Of A Friend
Milestone, 1972. Near Mint-
A haunting tribute to the late John Coltrane – not just a "friend" of McCoy Tyner, but a key musical partner back in the 60s! The album's a solo piano effort – extremely intimate, but still played with that long-flowing majesty we always love in McCoy – and two of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Supertrios
Milestone, 1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Tyner in two great trios – with Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums on one record – and with Eddie Gomez on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums on the other! LP, Vinyl record album
Enlightenment
Milestone, 1973. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A pretty great little live set – recorded at the Montreux Jazz fest in 1973, and featuring one of the better McCoy Tyner groups of the time! The album's a key set in McCoy's stretching out after the passing of Coltrane – a record that draws strongly from his 60s spiritual heritage, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Definitely What
Atco, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Brian Auger's first album away from singer Julie Driscoll – and a landmark batch of funky organ work that made big waves in both the rock and jazz worlds at the time! Focal Point
Milestone, 1976. Very Good
Brilliant 70s work from McCoy Tyner – a post-Coltrane batch of spiritual soaring jazz tracks, played and written by the man who's got more right to the style than just about anyone else! Tyner's joined by a pretty strong batch of players – including reedmen Gary Bartz on soprano and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stay Right With It
Riverside/Milestone, 1960s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Four sides of Barry Harris, from four different sides! This album's a nice 70s compilation showcasing the piano player at his lyrical best, in a couple of different trio settings, as well as several somewhat uncommon solo numbers and a great quintet featuring then young and relatively unknown ... Xanadu, 1954. Very Good+
A great Sonny Clark album – and very different than any of his other work! The album was recorded live at a private party in 1954, not issued until the mid 70s – and it features Sonny playing in a trio format, in a relaxed setting that has a bit more of an exploratory feel than some of ...
