Mandara Blossoms

CD (Item 538947) Steeplechase (Denmark), 1995 — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

CD

✈
An unusual 90s session from Stanley Cowell – but a great one too! The record features the talents of vocalist Karen Francis on most numbers – one of the first times we remember Stanley working with a singer, in a set of tunes that includes vocal readings of some great compositions from the Cowell songbook! Francis' tone is somewhat brighter than you might expect – spiritual at points, straighter at others – and the rest of the group features Bill Pierce on tenor, Jeff Halsey on bass, and Ralph Peterson on drums. Includes a wonderful reading of "Equipoise", plus "Daydream", "I Think It's Time To Say Goodbye Again", "This Life", "Mandara Blossoms", "Winter Reflections", and "Rivers Of Our Fathers".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Noah Preminger & Max Light

Songs We Love
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2022. Used
The title only partly gives the record away – because the set's not just comprised of favorites of guitarist Max Light and saxophonist Noah Preminger – it also includes some well-done original material by the pair! Yet even the covers are hardly served up in familiar ways – as ... CD

Kenny Drew/Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen

Duo
Steeplechase/Video Arts (Japan), 1976. Used
Beautifully spare work – duets in which Kenny Drew plays electric piano, in addition to his regular acoustic – a rare treat – alongside wonderful bass from Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen! CD

Olegario Diaz

Skyline Session
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2012. Used
Lots of great energy here – not just the piano of leader Orlegario Diaz, but also the trumpet of Randy Brecker, tenor of Rich Perry, bass of Ron McClure, and drums of Lewis Nash – the last of whom really seems to make the record sparkle! Nash has a way on the kit that makes even the ... CD

Guillermo Gregorio Trio

Red Cube(d)
Hatology (Switzerland), 1998. Used
Angular work from the Guillermo Gregorio Trio – a group with Gregorio on clarinet and tenor, Pandelis Karayorgis on piano, and Mat Maneri on electric violin! The sound here is somewhat obtuse at times – and reminds us a bit of Jimmy Giuffre's more "out" trio sides as the 60s ... CD
Verve, 1958. Used
Quite an unusual record for Sonny Rollins – but a great one too! At first glance the concept is a strange one – almost a crazy decision to pair modernist tenorist Sonny Rollins with a set of large brassy arrangements – but oddly, the idea works, and works nicely – as ... CD

Ornette Coleman

Something Else!!!!
Contemporary/OJC, 1958. Used
Pre-Atlantic work from Ornette Coleman – one of his first recorded statements in jazz – and one of his boldest! At some level, the complete Coleman sound isn't entirely in place here – as there's a bit of a trace of hardbop in the mix – not entirely, but just a bit. But at ... CD
Verve, 1949/1950. Used
The genius of Bird and strings is hard to describe – an edgey approach that really goes far past most other "jazz with strings" projects, not a ballad-driven one, but a tensely strained one that brings out some of Parker's best soloing, almost in a moody soundtrack-type way. The ... CD

Stanley Turrentine

More Than A Mood
BMG/Music Masters, 1992. Used
A great lineup featuring Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and fluglelhorn, Cedar Walton on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. CD
CBS/Sony (Japan), 1964. Used Gatefold
Miles Davis' first-ever performance in Japan – a really unique concert that featured the quintet with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – augmented by a young Sam Rivers on tenor! The presence of Rivers really gives the set an edge – and although Miles is holding Sam ... CD

Milt Jackson

Sunflower
CTI, 1972. Used
Proof that Milt Jackson was easily the hippest member of the Modern Jazz Quartet – and one of the few who could really open up into different sounds away from that combo! This sweet 70s set for CTI is totally great – a whole new chapter for Jackson's vibes, and a real re-setting of the ... CD
