Sir Charles Thompson & His Band – Featuring Coleman Hawkins (10 inch LP)

LP (Item 538442) Vanguard, Early 50s — Condition: Very Good
Originally: 23.99
Some nice work here by Coleman Hawkins – in a group that also features Benny Morton on trombone and Emmett Berry on trumpet!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing. Cover has light wear and just a tiny bit of seam splitting – but this is a nice clean copy overall.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Vanguard, Early 50s. Very Good+
One of Sir Charles Thompson's best sessions from the 50s – a bop inflected one that features a group with the great (and underrecorded Peter Brown) on alto. Also on the record are Joe Newman trumpet, Bennie Powell trombone, Gene Ramey bass, and Osie Johson drums. Thompson plays piano all ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

Timeless Aura
Vanguard, 1976. Near Mint-
Sweet funky electric work from James Moody – and pretty darn nice too! The set was produced by Ed Bland, the force behind the funky James Moody (and Dizzy Gillespie) sessions for the Perception and GWP labels in years back – and at many levels, the feel here is similar to those great ... James Moody

Sun Journey
Vanguard, 1976. Very Good+
Not as funky as Moody's work for Perception, but definitely in a similar mode. The record's got James playing alto, tenor, and soprano – in a group that includes Kenny Barron on electric piano, Roland Prince on guitar, and some guest trumpet by Randy Brecker. The tracks shift from warm and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Larry Coryell

Restful Mind
Vanguard, 1975. Very Good+
Guitarist Larry Coryell really changes it up from before – shedding both some of his electric modes and his vocal inclinations – and also working with a completely different group, who give the record a very unusual sound! Coryell plays a lot of acoustic guitar here, in addition to ... LP, Vinyl record album
Vanguard (UK), Mid 50s. Near Mint-
A split import LP – with two 10" Vanguard sessions on a single LP! Side one features the album Joe Newman & His Band – one of the hippest Vanguard jazz sessions of the 50s – with Joe Newman on trumpet, plus Frank Wess on tenor and flute, Matthew Gee on trombone, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Vanguard, 1955. Near Mint-
A really classic set from drummer Jo Jones – really more of a small group Count Basie outing – given that Basie himself guests on piano, and other players here include Freddie Green on guitar, Lucky Thompson on tenor, Emmet Berry on trumpet, and Bennie Green on trombone! The style is ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+
Soaring and soulful work from the legendary John Coltrane – a tremendous live set that's one of his best early 60s albums! The groove is open and free – filled with pulsating modal rhythms, and handled with a slightly more relaxed feeling than some of Trane's studio work from the same ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Double Image
Moon (France), 1969. Near Mint- 2LP
Mind blowing! This is a 2 LP version of a live set from 1969, recorded in Paris with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette. The sound on here is crazy, and goes waaaay out – farther out than anything we've ever heard by Miles. At times, the tracks break down ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1960. Sealed
A landmark album – not only for Freddie Redd, but for Jackie McLean, who's the real star of the session! In the early 60s, both Freddie and Jackie played together in a hip New York play called The Connection – working as a part of a live jazz band who were hanging out in an apartment, ... Gary McFarland

Point Of Departure
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great record – and one that's filled with so many wonderful little moments! The whole thing's a very cool, very off-beat set of jazz tracks recorded by vibist Gary McFarland, with a group that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Richie Kamuca on tenor, and Steve Swallow on bass – a ... Miles Davis

Kind Of Blue
Columbia, 1959. Very Good
What can we say? This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Timmons

Little Barefoot Soul
Prestige, 1964. Very Good
Killer trio work from pianist Bobby Timmons – a set that opens up with a lot more fire and freedom than some of his earlier dates for Riverside! When Timmons made the shift to Prestige, something really clicked in his playing – a new sense of energy, rhythm, and space that's all heard ... LP, Vinyl record album
