A treasure trove of rare jazz recordings – all material that was cut during the short run of the Beehive label – that excellent Chicago imprint that was based along the ideals of recordings first put in place by Blue Note and Prestige! Beehive also grabbed a lot of players who worked for those older labels, and gave them some of their best showcase in the studio – as you'll hear here on tracks that include a version of "Moonlight In Vermont", with Johnny Hartman on vocals and Al Gafa on guitar; "Like Someone In Love" with Sal Nistico on tenor and Ronnie Mathews on piano; "Blues In F" by the Walter Davis Jr piano trio; "Stablemates" performed by a sextet with Nick Brignola on alto, Pepper Adams on baritone, and Ted Curson on trumpet; and the titles "On Green Dolphin Street" and "Blues In The Closet", played by Sal Salvador on guitar, Eddie Bert on trombone, Nick Brignola on baritone, Derek Smith on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums.  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Hyde Park After Dark
Beehive, 1981. Near Mint-
A great tribute to the Chicago jazz scene of years back – a reunion of important players from the 50s, recorded in the laidback jam session style you'd expect to hear in an older club! The set was lovingly put together by pianist Norman Simmons, who arranged the tracks on the record – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Legacy
Beehive, 1980. Near Mint-
One of the excellent albums cut by the short-lived Bee Hive label – an imprint formed at the end of the 70s, with a strong dedication to recording in the classic soul jazz style of the 60s! This album features stunning work by pianist Ronnie Mathews – a wonderful talent who's barely ... LP, Vinyl record album
Neo/Nistico
Beehive, 1978. Sealed
Fantastic small group work from tenorist Sal Nistico – and one of the few records that really finds a way to capture his genius! Sal got his start in the Woody Herman band of the 60s – and although a standout there, he really shines even more brightly here in a small group setting ... LP, Vinyl record album
Juicy Lucy
Beehive, 1979. Sealed
A great return to form for guitarist Sal Salvador – a player who didn't always get that much time in the spotlight in the 70s, until a big wave of fresh exposure from the Beehive label! Sal got his start in the Stan Kenton group, where he learned a great sense of color and phrasing – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Killer Joe
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+
A fantastic album from tenor legend Benny Golson – one in which he reinvents his sound for the 70s, but still keeps all the tight sense of arrangement we loved in his earlier work! Benny's going for a funky jazz groove on most cuts – a bit clubby, in a Kudu Records mode – with a ... LP, Vinyl record album
BJ4
CTI, 1976. Very Good- Gatefold
The 4th in Bob James legendary run of Fender Rhodes classics for CTI – and a record that still has him working with the dark edges that made the first few so great! As usual with these sets, there's a way of putting over the groove that's really unique – not really funky, but spacious ... LP, Vinyl record album
Milestones
Columbia, 1958. Very Good+
One of our 50s favorites by Miles Davis – and a record that offers the same twin-sax sound as his classic Kind Of Blue – with both John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley working alongside Miles in the group! Rhythm here is by the Prestige-era trio of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers ... LP, Vinyl record album
Basie's In The Bag
Brunswick, 1967. Very Good-
Count Basie's definitely in the bag on this one – not so much as strong of a jazz bag as in classic years, but instead this very cool blend of soul and funk styles with his Kansas City roots! The record should be thought of more as a hip instrumental album – kind of in the jaunty 60s ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pure Desmond
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
An album of sublime understatement from alto genius Paul Desmond! Desmond was one of the few players who resisted the lure of the 70s electric CTI sound – and stuck pretty much in his usual bag of easy-going grooves, blowing alto with effortless ease, working here with a quartet that ... Milestone, 1972. Very Good-
A great mix of electric modes from Paul Bley – working here on Fender Rhodes and Arp, plus a bit of acoustic piano as well! The album's got a great reworking of the sense of space that Bley brought to his regular piano work – excellent accompaniment from Barry Altschul on percussion ... LP, Vinyl record album
Heart String
Liberty, 1978. Very Good
Earl Klugh's definitely got his heart on his strings here – working in this warm, mellow mode that's mighty nice – set to gentle orchestrations by Dave Matthews, which work perfect for Klugh's groove! There's nothing too over the top here, and Earl mixes acoustic and electric in a ... LP, Vinyl record album
