A treasure trove of rare jazz recordings – all material that was cut during the short run of the Beehive label – that excellent Chicago imprint that was based along the ideals of recordings first put in place by Blue Note and Prestige! Beehive also grabbed a lot of players who worked for those older labels, and gave them some of their best showcase in the studio – as you'll hear here on tracks that include a version of "Moonlight In Vermont", with Johnny Hartman on vocals and Al Gafa on guitar; "Like Someone In Love" with Sal Nistico on tenor and Ronnie Mathews on piano; "Blues In F" by the Walter Davis Jr piano trio; "Stablemates" performed by a sextet with Nick Brignola on alto, Pepper Adams on baritone, and Ted Curson on trumpet; and the titles "On Green Dolphin Street" and "Blues In The Closet", played by Sal Salvador on guitar, Eddie Bert on trombone, Nick Brignola on baritone, Derek Smith on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums.  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Hyde Park After Dark
Beehive, 1981. Near Mint-
A great tribute to the Chicago jazz scene of years back – a reunion of important players from the 50s, recorded in the laidback jam session style you'd expect to hear in an older club! The set was lovingly put together by pianist Norman Simmons, who arranged the tracks on the record – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Neo/Nistico
Beehive, 1978. Sealed
Fantastic small group work from tenorist Sal Nistico – and one of the few records that really finds a way to capture his genius! Sal got his start in the Woody Herman band of the 60s – and although a standout there, he really shines even more brightly here in a small group setting ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fire & Filigree
Beehive, 1978. Near Mint-
Nice session – one with a date that might make you a bit skeptical, but with a sound that's still very much in the pocket, thanks to good handling of the effort by the Bee Hive records team! Curtis blows here with a quintet that includes Sal Nistico, Walter Bishop Jr, Sam Jones, and Freddie ... LP, Vinyl record album
Truckin & Trakin
Beehive, 1984. Sealed
An overlooked gem from pianist Junior Mance – and maybe one of the most old school records he cut in the 80s! The set's a no-nonsense, soul-drenched session that maybe feels more like Prestige Records' soul jazz years than you might expect, given the date – with Mance on piano in a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1964. Very Good+
Bad Bossa Nova is right – as Gene Ammons really hits a great groove here – one that's not exactly bossa, but which has lots of Latin and tropical touches! The session makes great use of 2 guitars at the same time – using that of Kenny Burrell for soulful rhythm, but also adding ... LP, Vinyl record album
1st Bassman
Vee Jay, 1961. Very Good
One of the most obscure sessions as a leader from the legendary bassman Paul Chambers – the crucial talent who really helped reinvent the role of his instrument in jazz during the 50s – and who left our planet all too soon! The record's got a vibe that's a bit different than Paul's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good
A great addition to the Modern Jazz Quartet – as the clarinet of Jimmy Giuffre brings a sharp modern edge to the record! The album's similar to the other MJQ Music Inn date with Sonny Rollins – and shows how the addition of a reed player can really unlock new colors, tones, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chicken & Dumplin's
Prestige, 1965. Very Good-
One of Bobby Timmons' greatest albums, and one of his hardest to find! The session features Timmons with a great funky trio that provides amazing rhythm changes for his spiralling piano lines, and the record also has one long cut in which he plays vibes. There's 2 nice groovers – "Chick ... LP, Vinyl record album
Baritone Madness
Beehive, 1977. Sealed
Baritone madness, and a lot more too – a set that's full of surprises, and which may well be one of the most striking records on the Beehive label from Chicago! The date not only features twin terrors on baritone sax – Nick Brignola and Pepper Adams, both blowing at the height of their ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stone Flute
Embryo, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
Stone flute, or stoned flute, the album's got a really laidback feel – a sound that's very open-ended, and quite different from some of the crossover classics Herbie Mann was cutting a few short years before! The record's got the darkly brooding feel of some of his other work on the Vortex ... LP, Vinyl record album
How Insensitive
Blue Note, 1969. Very Good+
Another bold step forward in the too-short career of Duke Pearson – and one of the last few records before his untimely death! The session departs from previous Pearson work by using vocals on most tracks – sometimes a solo singer, either Andy Bey or Flora Purim, and sometimes a larger ... LP, Vinyl record album
Body & Soul
Prestige/Status, 1965. Good+
Nice laid-back blowing session tracks for Prestige, ostensibly led by Donald Byrd and Kenny Burrell, though the label may just have been capitalizing on their names on the cover. Players include Byrd, Hank Mobley, Mal Waldron, Paul Quinichette, Art Taylor and Sonny Red in a number of different ... LP, Vinyl record album
