Bill Watrous

LP (Item 538283) Columbia, Mid 70s — Condition: Very Good+
An overlooked bit of 70s big band jamming cut for Columbia by trombonist Bill Watrous, done in a mode that's partially like the funky Maynard Ferguson records for the label at the time, but which also has some of the hipper and more expansive approaches that you'd get on some of Woody Herman's best from the period, or (even better) some of the MPS big band classics of the time!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Miles Davis

Seven Steps To Heaven
Columbia, 1963. Near Mint-
A key point in the development of the Miles Davis sound of the 60s – his first album to feature work from Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – augmented by some equally nice work on other tracks from Victor Feldman and Frank Butler! The sound here is beautifully spare – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Blue Light
Columbia, Late 30s. Very Good-
Subtitled "jazz for that relaxed mood", this is actually a great compilation of early work by Ellington's group – recorded for Columbia during the years 1934 to 1939. Somehow, the tracks still end up sounding 30 years ahead of their time – far stronger than most any early 50s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hubert Laws

Romeo & Juliet
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+
Forget the Shakespearean reference in the title – which might make you think the whole album's got a Renaissance bent – because the album's a nice bit of funky flute jazz from Hubert Laws, done with the same groovy vibe as some of his earlier albums for the CTI label! The set was ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Mingus live is always a treat – especially in these later years, when the fire seemed to go out of most of his studio recordings. Live, though, he always managed to kick it hard - with the sort of emotion that graced his strong early albums. And despite the fact that this one's conducted by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Salongo
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+
A tremendous little record, and one of the funky 70s sets that Ramsey Lewis recorded with Earth Wind & Fire! Well, not Earth Wind & Fire entirely – but the Kalimba Productions team of Maurice White and Charles Stepney that gave the group its sound – plus a nice sprinkling of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1949. Very Good+ Gatefold
A rare early side of Miles Davis – recorded in postwar Paris in the company of Tadd Dameron! The group's a quintet – with Miles on trumpet and Tadd on piano – and although the overall vibe certainly shows a lot of bop generation spirit, there's also a strong indication of the ... Wynton Marsalis

Think Of One
Columbia, 1983. Sealed
Wynton Marsalis' second date for Columbia Records, and an album that already has him stretching out from the first! Unlike before, when Wynton was given a few older players to help establish his sound, the group here is all Marsalis' own – with brother Branford on tenor and soprano sax, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1951/1953. Near Mint-
A very well-done collection of Charlie Parker performances from the legendary Birdland nightclub – originally presented on radio, but cleaned up here with a great sense of sound! The mighty Symphony Sid can be heard introducing a few tracks, but the main focus is on the music – with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Man With The Horn
Columbia, 1980. Near Mint-
A nice little later album from Miles Davis – one that still has some sharp edges and interesting moments that refine the earlier electric sound of the 70s! Teo Macero's still producing here, and he gives the record a focus that really brings the best sound out of the tunes – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1950. Very Good+
Teddy Wilson's definitely fabulous here – playing with a sense of poise and timing that really links together a number of different piano jazz traditions – no surprise, given how many different scenes Teddy influenced! The setting is simple – just a trio format, with either Al ... LP, Vinyl record album

Red Rodney

Red Rodney Returns
Argo, Late 50s. Very Good
One of the great albums that Red Rodney recorded on his comeback in the late 50's, and one that features the great Philadelphia tenor player Billy Root. Root's playing is one of the highlights of this LP, and the tracks include "5709", "Red Hot and Blue", "Whirlwind", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jack McDuff

Check This Out
Cadet, 1972. Very Good+
A great Chess Records session from organist Jack McDuff – a set that also features great work on saxes from Red Holloway, Leo Johnson, and David Young – working with jack on a club date in the Bay Area! The vibe is great – very much as groovy and unusual as some of McDuff's Blue ... LP, Vinyl record album
