In Crowd

LP (Item 53737) Argo, 1965 — Condition: Very Good

Easily one of the biggest selling jazz albums of the 60s – a crowning achievement for Ramsey Lewis and his popular trio with Eldee Young on bass and Redd Holt on drums! The set was recorded live at the Bohemian Caverns in DC, and the trio are perfect in the setting – going at the numbers with pyrotechnic fury, but always staying in the soul jazz idiom – keeping things nice, tight, and in the pocket! Titles include the group's hit version of "The In Crowd", plus "You Been Talkin Bout Me Baby", "Spartacus", "Felicidade", and "Come Sunday".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue label mono Cadet pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ramsey Lewis

Funky Serenity
Columbia, 1973. Very Good-
Sweet electric funk from Ramsey Lewis! The album's one of his best from the 70s – and it's got Ramsey on Fender Rhodes, electric harpsichord, and other keyboards, grooving away in an open-ended 70s mode that still retains all the heavy soul of his classic work for Chess. Ramsey Lewis

Solid Ivory
Cadet, 1974. Very Good+
The date for this is 1974, but we're pretty sure the tracks are compiled from some of Ramsey's 60's sessions – especially because half of them are with the Young/Holt rhythm combo, and the other half are with Cleveland Eaton and Maurice White. Titles include "Easy Does It", "So ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Buckner

Mighty High
Argo, 1959. Very Good
Sweet and slow-burning organ from the great Milt Buckner – a really simple session overall, but one with lots of magical touches! Milt plays with a tone that's much lighter than a lot of his contemporaries on the Hammond – not as many tricks as Jimmy Smith, and perhaps more integrated ... LP, Vinyl record album

Argo, 1961. Very Good
A rare session as a leader from drummer Red Holt – cut at a time when he was making waves with the Ramsey Lewis Trio, and years before his work in Young Holt Unlimited! An early album by vibist Mike Mainieri – who later went on to do a lot of trippier albums in the late 60s.
