Sonny Rollins & The Big Brass (plus Sonny Rollins At Music Inn)

CD (Item 536790) Verve, 1958 — Condition: Used
$4.99 ...

CD

A strange one, and from this perspective, it seems like a crazy decision to pair modernist tenorist Sonny Rollins with a set of large brassy arrangements. Oddly, though, the idea works, and works nicely – as Rollins' edgey solos cut through the heavy arrangements with ease, creating some angular counterpoint and a tight little space to make his own sound. The group was conducted by Ernie Wilkins, and the flipside of the album features Rollins playing in a small trio with the great Henry Grimes on bass (who also played with Rollins on some of his best sessions from the time!) Titles include "Manhattan", "If You Were The Only Girl In the World", "Who Cares?", and "Far Out East". Plus, this CD also includes material from Sonny Rollins At Music Inn – a record that was split with Teddy Edwards (only the Rollins tracks are included here). Like some of his other sides from the time, the LP features Sonny with only bass and drums backing him up – blowing free, but quite tightly, with no sloppiness at all. Tracks include "Limehouse Blues" and "You Are Too Beautiful" – crafted with that searching angular style that made these moments in Rollins' career so great. CD also features bonus alternate endings of the track "Grand Street" – making for a total of 14 tracks in all, in a cool package, with great notes!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print, Verve Master Edition pressing.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

My Horns Of Plenty
Verve, 1991. Used
A rare moment in the major label spotlight for George Coleman – an early 90s session for Verve, and one that should have gotten him the same sort of ongoing recognition as contemporary sessions at the label by JJ Johnson, Randy Weston, and Joe Henderson! The format here is spare, but nicely ... CD

One of Basie's biggest albums – but still a work of pure genius! "April In Paris" is one of the darkest jazz standards ever written, and it never sounded better than in this original version, which features that great ending in which Basie and the band stop, then start, then stop ... CD
