One of the greatest talents in mainstream soul – recorded live, and sounding wonderful! Raphael Saadiq's been burning on the left side of the R&B mainstream for the past decade or more – really catching our ears with his work with Tony Toni Tone, and living up to his promise even more with his great solo work. But with an artist like this, we're always never sure how much of their talent comes from the studio – which is why it's really great to hear him live! The set's a wonderfully tight one – Raphael working with a live band in front of a tremendously enthusiastic crowd – getting help from famous friends that include D'Angelo, Joi, Ledisi, Goapele, and the rest of Tony Toni Tone. Titles include "Anniversary", "Loving You", "Let's Get Down", "Charlie Ray", "Excuse Me", "Faithful", "Ask Of You", "Just A Man", "Copy Cat", "Missing You", "Still A Man", and "It Never Rains". Plus, this CD features a bonus disc – with 7 more tracks that include "Be Here", "Uptown", "Different Times", "Still Ray", and "Blind Man".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Dorado (UK), 1994. Used
More in the acid jazz vein than some of her great laster NuSoul efforts, but still a wonderful single, with a slick jazzy feel that reminds us nicely of the mid 90s. The Outside mix gives it a jazzier spin, that we really dig, while "Secret Place" moves at a tempo that's a shade too slow ... CD

Natalie Gardiner

California
Ramjac (Sweden), 2008. Used
Natalie hails from Sweden – despite the California title of the set – but her music has a sweet, soulful sparkle that would be right at home in the US! The record's got a bit of the feel of some of the more cosmic soul coming out of the west coast underground – never too tripped-o ... CD

Algebra Blessett

Recovery
E One, 2014. Used
Wonderful work from Algebra Blessett – a singer who's really a cut above most other vocalists in the underground soul scene – with a classic sense of depth and timing that really knock this album out of the park! Algebra spent many years working under some of the bigger soul singers on ... CD
Dorado/Jazz Not Jazz (UK), 1997. Used
The second LP from this enigmatic UK soul diva. The album, like her first, has a tightly produced sample-driven funk groove, with lots of warm keyboard touches that work well with Jhelisa's shimmering vocals. There's definitely a bit more spaciness to the production style here, but it works ... CD

Monday Michiru

Delicious Poison
Kitty (Japan), 1996. Used
An album that has Monday Michiru returning to her jazz funk "roots", and singing with a band that plays live throughout, with no overdubs or samples. The band is a tight collective of young Japanese players, and they get a good hard sound that's reminiscent of the playing on the early ... CD

James Hunter

Believe What I Say
Ace/Hepcat, 1996. Used
Blue-eyed soul at its best – served up by James Hunter with a really classic sort of sound! This album came out a decade before Hunter's more famous work, but is a set that we still like a fair bit more – a surprisingly simple, no-nonsense effort that owes a fair bit to the smoother ... CD

Foreign Exchange

Connected
BBE (UK), 2004. Used
The start of a great legacy for Foreign Exchange – a duo made up of equal parts MC Phonte of Little Brother and Dutch production wiz Nicolay! The record was a pretty fitting departure for Phonte – whose crew re-ignited the southern hip hop underground for cats without the pimp crunk ... CD

Vicktor Taiwo

Joy Comes In Spirit
Innovative Leisure, 2018. Used
The fantastic first full length set from Vicktor Taiwo – an artist who may well redefine the sound of electro soul for the 21st Century! Vicktor's got a voice that would be wonderful in a standard setting – inflected with his Nigerian roots, and clear love of American soul music – ... CD

Joe Chambers

Mirrors
Blue Note, 1999. Used
Featuring Vincent Herring, Eddie Henderson, Mulgrew Miller and Ira Coleman. 9 numbers in all, including "Tu-Way-Pock-E-Way", "Mirrors", "Caravanserai", "Ruth", "Mariposa", "Lady In My Life", "Circles", "Come Back to Me" ... CD

Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes

Expansions
Flying Dutchman/RCA, 1975. Used
Quite possibly the most celebrated album ever from keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith – a groove-heavy classic that's burned up many a dancefloor in its day, yet also a record that features some great mellow moments as well! The title track "Expansions" is virtually a blueprint for ... CD
