We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Magic Of Sarah Vaughan
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good-
Plenty of magic here – a record with a different sound than some of Sarah Vaughan's earlier work – but one that's still pretty great! The backings here bring in plenty of strings, and a bit of voices – going for a full feel that's a bit like some of the country soul albums of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sammy Davis Jr & Count Basie
MGM, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint-
A 70s repackaging of an earlier album that Sammy and the Count cut for Verve – one that features Sammy vocalizing very strongly in front of a large brassy ensemble. Sammy didn't always get backing this strongly – and the album's got Quincy Jones handling the arrangements for Basie in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Mackay & Vicky Hamilton
Impulse, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the grooviest albums of the late 60s – a lost vocal treasure from the team of Dave MacKay & Vicky Hamilton! The pair were sort of like a hip version of Jackie & Roy – usually singing together on their tracks, with a mixed male/female vocal approach that sounds totally ... LP, Vinyl record album

Call It Jazz
Redwood, 1981. Very Good+
The second album by this excellent all-female San Francisco jazz combo – a live date that's even more cooking than their debut! As before, there's a sweetly breezy style to the record – that hip SF sound of the 70s – with echoes of Braziliana and soul amidst the group's jazzier ... LP, Vinyl record album

I Am Music
Blue Note, 1975. Very Good+
Carmen McRae really opens up on this sweet 70s set for Blue Note – expanding past the traditional jazz of her roots, and even some of the groovier work of her Atlantic years – into a sweeping, contemporary sound that's all adult, all the way! The vibe is great – in the same ... LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor, 1971. Good+
One of the greatest Roy Ayers albums of all time – and one of the rarest! The record is right in the same vein as Roy's groundbreaking He's Coming LP – a righteous mix of soul jazz, subtle funk, and some of the cosmic wisdom that Roy was spreading among the jazz funk underground – ... Phyllis Hyman
Buddah, 1977. Very Good
Far and away our favorite album by Phyllis Hyman – her first, and with lots of the same smooth jazzy soul touches you'd find in her work with Norman Connors! Phyllis is still as sophisticated as she is on later albums, but there's a bit freer style to the record – and Phyllis breaks a ... LP, Vinyl record album
