❔
Miki Howard at the top of her game – just the sort of record that had her standing out as one of the best new vocalists in soul during the second half of the 80s – and one of the few who could draw on the classic styles of earlier divas like Patti Labelle or Phyllis Hyman! Like both of those two, Howard's got a great range, but never pushes things to far – just effortlessly taps into the right modes at the right moments – and opens up with a flow that's a lot more timeless than some of the other soul albums of the time. There's certainly a few crossover numbers that are a bit pop, but there's also lots of the mellower, more serious numbers that Miki does so well. Titles include a duet with Gerald Levert on "That's What Love Is", a nice reading of Earth Wind & Fire's "Reasons", an update of the standard "You've Changed", and the tracks "Baby Be Mine", "In Too Deep", "I Wanna Be There", and "Bitter Love".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a hype sticker & promo stamp, cutout notch, some surface wear, corner bump.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Roberta Flack

I'm The One
Atlantic, 1982. Near Mint-
Roberta Flack still sounding great in the early 80s – co-produced with Ralph MacDonald, William Eaton, and William Salter – who all give the record a nice jazzy finish! Levert

Just Coolin'
Atlantic, 1988. Near Mint-
If you'd told us years ago we'd be digging this sort of late 80s commercial soul, we'd have laughed in your face. But nostalgia has taken hold, and we can't argue with the songcraft here, even if the production (and band's fashion sense) is a bit dated. Not a classic, by any means, but not as ... Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well ... LP, Vinyl record album

Great King Curtis
Atlantic/Clarion, Late 50s. Very Good+
A tasty set that documents the early work of King Curtis on Atlantic – packaged here on the label's small budget imprint Clarion, in a hard to find 60s package! Average White Band

Warmer Communications
Atlantic, 1978. Very Good+
In case you don't get the joke, the title's a play on the fact that Atlantic Records had just been acquired by Warner Communications – now fully a major label at the end of the 70s! That fact doesn't stop the album from being a good one, though – and AWB work here with Arif Mardin on a ... LP, Vinyl record album

What can we say? Booker T and crew are always tops in our book – and this album's as strong a batch of their classic singles as you'll ever find!
