Jimmy & Wes – The Dynamic Duo

CD (Item 532281) Verve, 1966 — Condition: Used

CD

✈
A really wonderful album in the Verve Records catalog of the 60s – a set that's not only a fantastic meeting between two superstar jazz musicians, with Jimmy Smith on Hammond and Wes Montgomery on guitar – but one that also takes things in a whole groovy new dimension, thanks to the arrangements of Oliver Nelson! Nelson is at his soulful best here – working on hard-swinging charts that almost seem to liberate Jimmy and Wes to do even more with their solos – really stretching out, with an especially great sound from Smith on the organ – maybe at a level that makes the record one of his best of all time for Verve! Titles include "James & Wes", "Night Train", "13 (Death March)", and "Down By The Riverside".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(1997 Verve Master Edition, case has some wear.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Johnny Griffin

JG
Argo/Verve, Late 50s. Used
Excellent early work by Johnny Griffin – a set that's a bit more obscure than some of his Blue Note classics to come, and which was recorded on the Chicago hometown scene from which he first sprang! The group here is a quartet – with Junior Mance on piano and Wilbur Ware on bass – ... CD

1975 – The Duets (LP sleeve edition)
A&M/Verve, 1975. Used Gatefold
Excellent mid 70s duet jazz from pianist Dave Brubeck & alto Paul Desmond! Duets 1975 is a nicely laidback work from the duo – playing here with no other accompaniment, in a spare set of material that's incredibly fragile and intimate – and all the better for that. The move is a ... CD

Teddy Wilson

Intimate Listening
Verve (Japan), 1952/1953. Used
Intimate listening from pianist Teddy Wilson, but surprisingly lively listening too – as Teddy's as fleet on the keys as ever, and maybe even more so in this well-recorded session from the 50s! The record's got a great Verve vibe – simple, unadorned presentation of the Teddy Wilson ... CD

Love Letter
Verve, 2020. Used
The last album that Jimmy Heath ever gave the world – and a record that makes us miss him even more – as the whole thing takes Heath back to that spectacular mix of solo expressionist, thoughtful composer, and sensitive arranger territory of his best early years! And if you want proof ... CD
