Voices In The Rain

LP (Item 531346) MCA, 1980 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
Originally: 4.99
Joe Sample's sitting at a grand piano on the cover, and that image is a nice tip-off to the sound within – an approach that has Joe hitting some more sophisticated acoustic passages at points, while still opening up into the soulful groove we'd expect from his legacy as a core member of The Crusaders! Sample plays both acoustic and electric keys on the album – and the whole thing's a perfect part of that mighty run that Joe gave us with his solo work on MCA – music that's every bit as great as Crusaders albums of the time, and which we continue to love a lot more than some of Sample's later albums. The sound is never overdone, or too commercially produced – and there's a balance of acoustic elements that later 80s fusion always seemed to forget. Flora Purim sings a bit on the record – but most of the set is instrumental – and titles include "Shadows", "Burnin Up The Carnival", "Greener Grass", "Eye Of The Hurricane", and "Dream Of Dreams".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

God, we love this record – and we're not ashamed to admit it! Sure, it sold a gazillion copies – and sure, for some folks it showed the true demise of the Crusaders ensemble. But for us, it's a masterpiece of smooth fusion, and a landmark album of easy jazz that spawned countless ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rainbow Seeker
ABC, 1978. Very Good-
A sublime solo set from the great Joe Sample – a set recorded right at a time when his work with The Crusaders was breaking very big, and Joe was becoming one of the hottest fusion keyboardists of the 70s! This set gives Sample a nicely different focus than The Crusaders – more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Deodato

Whirlwinds
MCA, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sweet keyboard soul from Deodato – a set that steps off nicely from the strengths of his big hits on CTI, hitting a similarly flowing groove that's really great! The instrumentation here is a bit more expanded than before, but never in a way that buries the keyboards – and Deodato's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse/MCA, 1961. Near Mint-
Killer stuff by Art Blakey – one of his few non-Blue Note sessions from the time, and a hard-wailing set that features the Jazz Messengers as a sextet! The format is one that flourished briefly in these early 60s years – and in this case, the already great lineup of Lee Morgan on ... LP, Vinyl record album

MCA, 1979. Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums ever from The Crusaders – a set that really sums up all the tightness they'd forged in the 70s, while still showing a new sense of soul and funk as well – expertly balanced with flawless LA production! The album may well be the group's equivalent of a Steely ... LP, Vinyl record album

MCA, 1974. Near Mint-
A live set from Deodato – but one that's very much in the mode of his best CTI studio sessions – with soaring, over the top keyboard work that's totally great – backed by some tightly compressed guitar, bass, and drums, with just enough funk in the mix to keep things interesting! ... Great later blowing from John Klemmer – clear, clean, and extremely well-focused – with nary a dull moment throughout! Blues Walk
Blue Note, 1958. Very Good
A pivotal album in the career of saxophonist Lou Donaldson – a set that really has him finding his own groove – a slow-stepping, soul-drenched mode that's a nice change from the bop of his roots!
