Mississippi John Hurt 1963 – Vol 1 Of The Original Piedmont Recordings – Folksongs & Blues

LP (Item 530800) Piedmont, 1963 — Condition: Very Good+
A set that marks the first-ever time that Mississippi John Hurt recorded material that was destined for an album, not singles – a set with titles that include "Louis Collins", "Spike Driver Blues", "Spanish Fandang", "My Creole Belle", "Joe Turner Blues", "Salty Dog", and "Avalon Blues".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Red label pressing, in a paste-on cover. Cover has a very light, small stain in one bottom corner – but this is a very nice copy.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Nighthawk, Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint-
Great work from the Chicago blues underground – rare tracks pulled from a time before labels like Chess and Vee Jay handled most of the big artists, and talents were spread between a handful of much smaller indies! The music here marks that key Chicago transition from rural to urban – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Big Jack Johnson

Oil Man
Earwig, 1987. Near Mint-
Jack Johnson plays lots of mean guitar here – in a quartet that features Frank Frost on piano, instead of the guitar you might know from his earliest material! LP, Vinyl record album
Chess, Mid 60s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Is it Fulsom or Fulson? We're not going to try and present ourselves as the authority, but what we can tell you is this collection features 27 tracks from the man, mostly raw blues, though a number of cuts are more produced, with full horn section and piano complementing Fulsom's guitar and vocals ... Blind Boy Fuller

Truckin My Blues Away
Yazoo, Late 30s. Near Mint-
A great little record from Yazoo – almost worth the price alone for the great Robert Crumb cover art – but a real treasure considering the vintage recordings by Blind Boy Fuller underneath! The set brings together Fuller recordings from the years 1936 to 1939 – surprisingly well-r ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mississippi, Late 60s/Early 70s/Early 90s. Near Mint-
A great mix of vintage and later work from Abner Jay – a unique one man band in the best rural blues tradition of the south – and who, like some of the best, doesn't ever use his multi-instrument talent as a gimmick! Instead, Jay works here in a mode that's like a stripped-down combo, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Candid, 1960. Sealed
A really fantastic showcase for the Chicago-raised Otis Spann – a musician who'd already had plenty of recordings under his belt by the time of this session, but definitely gets a different sort of exposure here – thanks to the unique presentation of the Candid Records label! Von Freeman

Serenade & Blues
Nessa, 1979. Near Mint-
Right from the very first note, you'll know you're in for something special here – the unusual phrasing and open-hearted qualities that made Von Freeman one of the true Chicago legends on the tenor saxophone – even though he never got the global fame of contemporaries like Clifford ... Konrad Elfers

Funeral in Berlin
RCA, 1967. Near Mint-
One of the grooviest Michael Caine spy films of the 60s – given an equally groovy soundtrack by Konrad Elfers! We don't know Elfers from other work of the time, but this album's a real standout – not the usual spy sort of work, although still with some great jazzy touches at times ...
