Salsa Explosion – The Sound Of Fania Records

CD (Item 530675) Fania, 1970s — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

Smoking salsa from the legendary Fania Records – a hip batch of numbers that focuses on the groundbreaking sounds of the New York Latin scene in the 70s! The track selection here is pretty classic, but that's ok with us – given the strength of the grooves – and there's also a nice touch of Latin Soul at times, showing the full range of the Fania sound. Titles include "A Mi Nena" by Rafi Val & La Differente, "Che Che Cole" by Willie Colon, "El Todopodoeroso" by Hector Lavoe, "O Mi Shango" by Mongo Santamaria, "Pachito Eche" by Tito Puente & Celia Cruz, "Tu Lo Sientes" by Joe Cuba, "Cucala" by Celia Cruz & Johnny Pacheco, "Brother Where Are You" by Ralfi Pagan, "Bilongo" by Eddie Palmieri, "Guaguanco Arsenio" by Tito Puente & Azuquita, "El Nuevo Barretto" by Ray Barretto, and "Ahora Es El Tiempo" by Louie Ramirez.  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Orchestra Harlow

El Judio Maravilloso
Fania, 1975. Used
A great testament to the depth and versatility of Orquestra Harlow in the 70s – and a record that shift easily between traditional modes and more contemporary styles! Larry Harlow is at the top of his game here – working with careful sensitivity on some of the more fragile numbers, but ... CD

Pete El Conde Rodriguez

Fiesta Con El Conde
Fania, 1982. Used
Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez was always one of the richest voices to sing on the New York Latin scene in the 70s – a talent with this way of going deep, and really stretching out his notes – but at a level that was quite different than so many other singers of his generation! ... CD
Fania, 1982. Used
A cheesy cover, but a really top-shelf effort from Ray Barretto – one that has him standing strongly in the early 80s, at a time when most other leaders of his nature were beginning to falter! The record's still strongly in the Barretto salsa mode of the 70s, but it's also got a jazzy ... CD

Fania All-Stars

Tribute To Tito Rodriguez
Fania, 1976. Used
The Fania All Stars pay tribute to older Latin great Tito Rodriguez – in a set of shorter tracks that's really the group's first true outing in the studio! The format here is quite different than the earlier live albums cut by the group – a sound that's a bit more focused, and without ... CD

International/Fania/Codigo, 1973. Used
The mighty Apollo Sound combo at the height of their powers – hard-hitting on percussion, but also sparkling with some jazzier touches on tenor sax, flute, and trombone! Roberto Roena had a slightly looser groove than some of his contemporaries, and as you'll hear on this set, there's space ... CD

Willie Colon

El Juicio
Fania, 1972. Used
Supposedly the end of Willie Colon's early "crime" career – as the title and cover imply that he's finally been brought to trial! Don't worry about Willie being beaten down, though, because the music on the album is every bit as fierce and powerful as ever – and features a ... CD

One of the real standouts in the career of Ricardo Ray and Bobby Cruz – a record of incredible tightness, and one that set a whole new level for Puerto Rican salsa in the 70s! There's still a few traces here of the Latin Soul years – sometimes in the rhythms, at other times in the ... CD
