❔
Lots of musical magic here – a further extension of the Return To Forever vibe that helped Chick Corea find some of his best energy of the 70s! The style is still as tightly focused as before, but also opens up with a bit more soul, too – trading some slight moments of jamming for a CTI sense of funk – a mighty nice move that makes this album one of our all-time favorites by the group! Gayle Morgan plays some very cool organ and mini-moog next to Chick's wide array of keyboards – and Joe Farrell serves up wonderful tenor, soprano sax, and flutes – which really help shape the sound. Stanley Clarke brings in plenty on bass – and a bit of vocals too – and the whole thing's nicely kicking, as you'll hear on cuts that include "The Musician", "Hello Again", "Musicmagic", "So Long Mickey Mouse", "Do You Ever", and "Endless Night".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover is nice!)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Columbia (France), 1963. Very Good+
The first Thelonious Monk album for Columbia Records – and one of the best, as well – a beautiful illustration of the way that his shift in labels really set some new fire to his music in the early 60s! The group is Monk's sharp-edged quartet with the amazing Charlie Rouse on tenor, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Golden Hits
Columbia, 1973. Very Good+
We know you've seen this record a million times, just like us, and probably passed it up because it appears to be a greatest hits compilation, just like we did! But it's actually Ramsey and his funky mid 70s trio with Morris Jennings and Cleveland Eaton revisiting some of his best loved material ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

All American In Jazz
Columbia, 1962. Very Good+
A lesser-known Ellington set from the 60s – tracks from the lesser-remembered musical, with alto from Johnny Hodges, trumpet from Ray Nance, and tenor from Paul Gonsalves! Titles include "Our Children", "Nightlife", "I've Just Seen Her", "Back To ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wayne Shorter

Joy Ryder
Columbia, 1988. Near Mint-
A fusion set, but one that's got all those sharp, dark edges that Wayne Shorter developed over the years – served up here with a depth that's maybe much more in the far-reaching fusion styles of Columbia Records in the 70s than some of the more polished efforts of the time! The core combo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Sorcerer
Columbia, 1967. Near Mint-
Another bold new direction for the legendary Miles Davis Quintet of the 60s – a set that has some of the angular styles of earlier albums, but also a bit more of the flowing grace to come in the electric years! A key illustration of this is the leadoff track "Prince Of Darkness" ... LP, Vinyl record album

JJ Johnson

J Is For Jazz
Columbia, 1956. Near Mint-
Nicely sharp sounds from the great JJ Johnson – a set that has the trombonist really honing his edge on a host of tight, short tracks – with a vibe that almost recalls his initial bop recordings on Blue Note and Prestige! The style here is a bit more sophisticated – definitely ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1953. Near Mint-
A heavy classic from trumpeter Buck Clayton – and a record that set a whole new standard for the jam session on record at the time! Miles Davis

Miles Smiles
Columbia, 1966. Near Mint-
Miles Smiles, but his grin is a wry one – given the angular energy of the set! The album's a landmark effort from the mid 60s quintet that includes Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – all of whom work without fail to capture Davis' newly emerging approach to ... Eric Dolphy

Out To Lunch
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good+
One of Eric Dolphy's lasting classics – and possibly the ultimate album of "new thing" jazz from the mid 60s! The record's got an even sharper edge than previous Dolphy recordings for Prestige – a really unique combination of instrumentation that includes Freddie Hubbard on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bernard Purdie

Purdie Good!
Prestige, 1971. Near Mint-
Bernard Purdie's first album as a leader for Prestige – cut right after he'd hipped up plenty of other sessions for the label with his famous funky drums! The groove here is very much in the best Prestige jazz funk mode of the early 70s – tightly vamping rhythms that draw heavily from ... LP, Vinyl record album
