We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Joy Ride
ABC, 1976. Very Good- Gatefold
Sweetly smooth grooving from The Dramatics – tighter than their years at Stax, but still tremendous stuff vocally – with a sound that mixes the rough and the sweet like nobody else! The album features works by a number of different producers – including group members Ron Banks ... LP, Vinyl record album
Shake It Well
ABC, 1977. Very Good-
Incredibly great work from The Dramatics – the kind of record that hits on all burners instantly, and just keeps on cooking all the way through! The set kicks off with the title funky cut "Shake It Well" – done in a mode that the group handle surprisingly well, thanks to some ... LP, Vinyl record album
Dramatically Yours
Volt, 1974. Sealed
We've got to admit that we're such big fans of the first two albums by the Dramatics that we're always hard pressed to love any other albums of theirs as much – but this one's still a strong effort that retains many of the best elements of the earlier records, particularly the mellow soul ... Stax/Volt, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
A fantastic album by The Dramatics – with a harder funkier sound than you'll find on most of their other records of the time – a gritty gem from the group's early years, and a record that really deserves its placement on the Stax label! The record has the group moving into a post-Tempta ... LP, Vinyl record album
Volt, 1970. Very Good+
A great early album from Margie Joseph – and a real standout in the post-Atlantic Stax Record scene! The sound here isn't as standard Memphis as some of the other records on the label at the time – more a blend of southern soul, Detroit styles, and a few other bits – pulled ... Volt, 1964. Very Good
An album with a very fitting title – as the whole set is practically a dictionary of soul music, for anyone who needs an understanding of the genre! Soul Album
Volt, 1966. Sealed
Classic stuff by Otis – and a very appropriately titled album! The record's from the prime mid 60s years of Redding's recorded output – before Atlantic started pumping out everything he ever recorded, and when the folks at Stax were using all their talent to put together a well-conceive ... Let's Do It
Polydor, 1978. Near Mint-
Pure magic from the height of Roy Ayers' classic 70s run on Polydor – a record that's filled with warm, jazzy grooves – all served up in that unique style that Roy was forging at the time! The album perfectly balances dancefloor tracks with mellower numbers – stepping out one ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tamla, 1971. Near Mint-
One of the few cases in the history of pop music where the record is worth all the hype! Marvin blew everyone's mind when he unleashed this amazing suite of political soul tunes – not only just because he'd moved past the simple love songs of earlier years, but also because he was working ... Inner Spectrum
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
A tremendous debut from Ace Spectrum – a harmony quartet who never cracked the charts as much as some of their east coast contemporaries, but who were every bit as great as the bigger names on the east coast scene! The album's got a soaring sound that's strongly influenced by Philly, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pizzazz
Elektra, 1979. Near Mint-
Brilliant work from Patrice Rushen – one of the records that not only helped break her out of the jazz funk ghetto, and right into the mainstream – but a set that also had a pretty profound influence on the progression of soul in the early 80s! Rushen sings as well as plays keyboards ... LP, Vinyl record album
Have Mercy Baby
King/Charly (UK), Early 50s. Near Mint-
Killer work from this legendary vocal group – a key percursor in the development of soul! Although it's easy to write the Dominoes off as some sort of weak pop/soul doo wop group, because they cut some singles that sounded more like the Platters than hardcore R&B, don't forget that the ...
