We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Joy Ride
ABC, 1976. Very Good Gatefold
Sweetly smooth grooving from The Dramatics – tighter than their years at Stax, but still tremendous stuff vocally – with a sound that mixes the rough and the sweet like nobody else! The album features works by a number of different producers – including group members Ron Banks ... LP, Vinyl record album
Shake It Well
ABC, 1977. Very Good-
Incredibly great work from The Dramatics – the kind of record that hits on all burners instantly, and just keeps on cooking all the way through! The set kicks off with the title funky cut "Shake It Well" – done in a mode that the group handle surprisingly well, thanks to some ... LP, Vinyl record album
Dramatically Yours
Volt, 1974. Sealed
We've got to admit that we're such big fans of the first two albums by the Dramatics that we're always hard pressed to love any other albums of theirs as much – but this one's still a strong effort that retains many of the best elements of the earlier records, particularly the mellow soul ... Booker T Set
Stax, 1969. Near Mint-
Later work from Booker T and crew – an album that always gets lost in the shuffle, but which also includes lots of great moments, and a bit more funk than in earlier years! The rhythm section's loosening up a bit on the set – led by the mighty Al Jackson, and working past that tight ... LP, Vinyl record album
Dramatic Jackpot
ABC, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of their best, and a real masterpiece of 70's group soul. The arrangements are sweet, but the group is as hard as they ever were, but free to soar in their singing with the massive arrangements provided by the Detroit Groovesville crew. Ron Banks and LJ Reynolds are in perfect form, and this ... LP, Vinyl record album
Watchin' You, Watchin' Me
Chi Sound/United Artists, 1976. Very Good
A perfect example of the old adage that the funkier the band's name is, the less funky their music will be! Not that the group's really that bad or anything – they're just not the all-out party jam you'd expect from an ensemble with "ebony" and "funk" in their name. The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1976. Very Good- Gatefold
Quite possibly the funkiest album ever from Pleasure – and that's saying a heck of a lot! The album grooves from the very first note – and moves through some of the group's tightest, most rock-solid numbers – all of which use their trademark blend of funky and soul, but which ... LP, Vinyl record album
Volt, 1960s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Not necessarily a complete "history" of the man – but a classic "best of" compilation that includes some of his greatest tracks ever! Titles include "Security", "Mr Pitiful", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Try A Little Tenderness" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stu Gardner & The Sanctified Sound
Volt, 1974. Very Good
Funky keyboard player Stu Gardner cut a few indie albums in LA during the late 60s, and most of those have gone onto be sought-after funky instrumental classics. This mid 70s album for Stax has a bit more of a soul sound to it, with fuller arrangements, and vocals on most of the tracks – but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Brunswick, 1972. Near Mint-
A great collection of tracks that features many hard to find tracks from the early days, before the band broke super-huge with "Oh Girl". That one's included on this album, as are the cuts "A Lonely Man", "Let Me Be The Man My Daddy Was", "Love Uprising", ... LP, Vinyl record album
New Direction
Neptune, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Excellent stuff from this lost groovy vocal group! The New Direction were an obscure early Gamble-Huff group, and in a way, they're sort of a precursor to later male/female combos on Philly – like The Futures or The Ebonys – except for the fact that The New Direction are a bit more pop ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chocolate Chip
HBS/ABC, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
Slightly later than some of Isaac Hayes' biggest Stax albums – but a great little record that's filled with some excellent smooth soul material! The record shows Hayes really trying to push his style to new levels, and it's got a sophistication that you don't hear on earlier albums – a ... LP, Vinyl record album
