We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sarah + 2
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good+
Sarah Vaughan's most stripped-down session – a record that really does just have "plus 2" added to the lady's lovely vocals! Backing here are only by Barney Kessel on guitar and Joe Comfort on bass – accompanying Sarah in a moody, mellow, late nite mode that's far different ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury/Wing, 1957. Very Good
A travel-themed set from Patti Page – and a pretty darn great one at that! Patti nicely shakes off some of cliches here – working with full, jazzy backings, and often hitting sounds that are a bit more mature than on her familiar pop numbers – modes that nicely match the global ... Contemporary, 1956. Very Good
Claire's the wife of drummer Chuck Austin, and as far as we know, this classic set of west coast vocal jazz is the only album she ever cut. The set features spare backing by a quintet – with Barney Kessel, Stan Wrightsman, Shelly Manne, Morty Corb, and Bob Scobey – and the overall ... LP, Vinyl record album
Today
Mercury, 1968. Very Good
The Lennon Sisters get groovy – as you might guess from the "Today" title, and from the set of cool 60s covers they perform on the set! The sound here is quite far from Lawrence Welk on Sunday night, and the girls sound great with fab 60s arrangements from Al Capps, and some top-she ... LP, Vinyl record album
Once In Every Life
Beehive, 1980. Sealed
A superb album from vocalist Johnny Hartman – a later date, but one that we'd rank right up there with his important Impulse Records material of the 60s! In fact, the album's something of a return to greatness for Hartman – the kind of date that should have become a jazz standard, had ... LP, Vinyl record album
Easy
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good
Killer 60s work from Nancy! Despite the "easy" in the title, this record's a perfect batch of pop soul tunes – arranged by Jimmy Jones with a breezy style that works perfectly for Nancy's voice. The record features her big hit "Face it Girl, It's Over", which was ... LP, Vinyl record album
Big Band Specials
Capitol, 1962. Very Good
A very different album than usual for June Christy – one of her last for Capitol, and a very swinging, upbeat affair! As the title implies, June's singing a set of tunes made famous during the glory days of the big bands – tracks associated with Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw ... LP, Vinyl record album
New Kind Of Love
Roulette, 1963. Very Good
Joe Williams is away from Count Basie here, but he's still sounding great – and getting a slightly warmer approach overall – in keeping with the promise of the title! The arrangements aren't credited on the notes, but they've got a slightly lusher feel than Basie – a bit more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jaro, Late 50s. Near Mint-
One of the greatest albums ever by the consummate jazz hipster – Babs Gonzales!
