We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Capitol, 1976. Very Good
We don't know much about CM Lord, and this record's the only one we've ever seen from her, but she's got a nice deep soul voice, and the record's a great mix of southern-styled vocals and smoother LA backing. There's some slight country soul tinges to the cuts, but the best parts of the album ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1980. Very Good-
Another great little set from Sun – one of those "secret groups" from the late 70s who cut more albums than you might think! Like the others, this one's a mixture of Earth Wind & Fire-inspired large group funk, with some spacier touches that are in keeping with their name and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1978. Very Good+
An obscure soundtrack for a late blacksploitation film starring Ron O'Neal. The score isn't as great as some of the classics – but it does feature some nice moments by some of Capitol's bigger stars at the time. Clayton Ivey and Larry Mizell produced most of the cuts, and tracks include ... LP, Vinyl record album

Observations In Time
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good+
A really unusual album from the mighty Ohio Players – their first full length set, and a record that's very different than their better-known work on Westbound and Mercury – but every bit as great! The band is tight and funky, but in a sort of deep soul 60s way – with ... LP, Vinyl record album

On Stage!
Capitol, 1957. Very Good+
Wonderful vocal group soul from The Five Keys – easily one of the tightest, sharpest, most sophisticated groups of their generation! A dozen numbers in all, including "Just For A Thrill","Who Do You Know In Heaven", "Maybe You'll Be There","Tiger Lily" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hit Man
Tamla, 1975. Very Good-
Eddie certainly was the "hit man" on this one – a tight album of hard stepping soul tracks, mostly cut in Eddie's famous "boogie" mode of the mid 70s! The cuts mix wonderful soul vocals with some tight jazzy instrumentation – laid down by players like Wah Wah Ragin, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Arista, 1978. Near Mint-
From the cover, this looks like a throwaway disco album with a sex-heavy package designed to sell you a load of crap – but on the inside, the record's actually a pretty nice batch of funky soul, in the best tradition of some of the smooth modern work that started showing up on Arista at the ... Brand New Day
Cotillion, 1983. Very Good+
Ronnie's a long way from his falsetto soul hits of the early 70s – but he's seriously back on track as a soul artist, thanks to some smooth help from the Ingram family! Butch Ingram produced the album, and the rest of the Ingrams helped out on instruments, vocals, and even some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
