❔

The genius of Richie Havens at this point is beyond compare – a unique take on the dying folk sound of the 60s, one that infused it with a deeper sense of soul that helped it get new legs in the Woodstock generation – yet which is also heard here before any of the post-hippie cliches that would bog down some of Richie's later work. There's an earnestness to this music that's also touched with a good degree of worldly sense – a notion that the world was changing, but one person at a time, and mostly through the gentle efforts and honest efforts of souls like Richie. This LP features 11 tracks in all – with titles that include "High Flyin' Bird", "San Francisco Bay Blues", "Just Like A Woman", "Sandy", "Three Day Eternity", "Follow", and "Handsome Johny".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Verve Forecast pressing. Cover has splitting on the spine and light aging.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Room For One More
Verve, 1965. Near Mint-
Although Irene Reid later went on to make some recordings that had her in a more rootsy setting, this nice set from the mid 60's features her deep soul voice amidst classy jazz-based arrangements by Oliver Nelson. Decca, 1970. Near Mint-
An excellent comeback album from the great Clyde McPhatter! The record was recorded in 1970, after Clyde had spent some time in Europe, kicking about and getting his head together. All About Love
ABC, 1977. Near Mint-
The last record that we've ever found by this excellent sweet soul group – and one that continues the strong tradition of modern group soul begun on their 20th Century albums. Flavor

In Good Taste
Ju-Par, 1976. Near Mint-
Flavor's main approach seems to be towards the funky up-tempo dancefloor cuts that were showing up on a lot of group soul albums at the time – but the male trio's vocal style seems best suited to the mellower numbers, which let them do a bit more than just struggle to keep up with the music. ... The classic first album by The JBs – James Brown's Fred Wesley-led backing band, and the force behind most of his greatest records of the early 70s! CBS (Netherlands), 1974. Near Mint-
Asha Pulthi's first album – an excellent set of funky soul tunes, recorded in Germany with backings that are a mixture of spacey electric, smooth funk, and campy easy grooves. I Had To Fall In Love
A&M, 1978. Near Mint-
A great little solo set from Jean Terrell – a singer who's probably best known for her work as the leader of The Supremes after Diana Ross left the group, but who sounds even better here on her own!
