Theater Of The Mind

CD (Item 527972) Epic, 1986 — Condition: Used
$14.99 ...

CD

A great little album from James Mtume – a bit more complicated and righteous than some of his previous albums on Epic, and with a real mix of styles that works nicely together! The album starts off with "Theme For Theater Of The Mind", a sort of 80s take on the spiritual/political soul jazz sound of the 70s – and a cut that really sets the mood for the album. The record features 80s funk numbers like "I Don't Believe You Heard Me", which is a tribute to James Brown, "New Face Deli", and "POP Generation", which was a bit of a hit. It's also got some great smooth quiet storm numbers – like a remake of Bootsy's "I'd Rather Be With You", and the slinky late night number "Body & Soul (Take Me)". And the extended guitar-jamming "Deep Freeze", which features a "rap-a-song" part!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print original Epic pressing.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

One of Mtume's sweet mellow soul records for Epic from the early 80's. Like Norman Connors, another soul jazz drummer who decided to go for a smooth soul approach, Mtume has a nice laidback feel on here, with good jazzy production backing up a number of vocal tracks aimed at the modern soul crowd. ... A great mix of the talents of Michael Jackson and his famous brothers – and a set that's probably got an equal weight on the focus of both! There's a fair bit of Off The Wall-era Michael that informs this set – the kind of upbeat, grooving tracks that made that record so great – ... CD
