An excellent set from Julius Hemphill – one that has him working in trio formation with Abdul Wadud on cello and Famoudou Don Moye on percussion – players that seem to be a perfect fit for his spirit on the date! There's a slightly loft jazz feel to the record, but the overall sound is a bit more put-together – composed by Hemphill with thoughtful, complex lines on some of the tunes – in ways that dig back to his roots in feeling, yet also show the increasing sophistication of his sound as the 70s moved on. Hemphill plays both soprano and alto sax, and Wadud's cello, as always, is a real treat – completely unlike the use of the instrument by most other players we know.
