Lester Swings

LP (Item 527484) Verve, 1945/1950/1951 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold

A collection of material gathered from Verve albums "Pres", "Lester Swings Again", and "Lester Young/Buddy Rich Trio", with pianists Nat King Cole, Hank Jones, and John Lewis.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Lester Young

Lester Young (Pres)
Charlie Parker/Everest, Early 50s. Near Mint-
No real date or personnel on this one, and the album's a live set recorded, most likely, at some time in the 50s. The quality of the recording isn't great, and you hear a heck of a lot of crowd noise – but the work's an interesting document of Pres during the period, as the tunes are all ... Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd

Jazz Samba
Verve, 1962. Very Good Gatefold
One of those records that no home should be without – not only a pivotal album in the growth of bossa nova in the 60s – but a set that also really helped set the career of tenorist Stan Getz on fire! The real credit here might almost go to guitarist Charlie Byrd – as Byrd was a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1960. Very Good
One of the strongest sides to feature Diz's mid 50s format – a larger group than usual, an octet, with a more tightly arranged style that showed that he continued to develop as an artist long after the days of his early bop sides. The album's also noteworthy for demonstrating Dizzy's great ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1958. Very Good

Jerome Richardson

Groove Merchant
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good
A great little album of jazzy tracks from multi-talented reedman Jerome Richardson! The album's got a sort of jazzy meets Now Sound sound – sort of like the Benny Golson or Cal Tjader albums on Verve from the time, and it's a great one if you dig that sort of thing. The tracks are mostly ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1949. Near Mint-
One of our favorite of Verve's "genius of" collections of Charlie Parker's work – largely because it includes some wonderful and oft-overlooked vocal tunes! 4 of the tracks on the set feature Bird blowing with a vocal chorus arranged by Dave Lambert – in a style that shouldn't ... Verve, 1957. Near Mint-
An unusual live date for Oscar Peterson – in that it wasn't actually officially recorded by Verve, but done by a fan and handed over to Norman Granz at a later date!
