Cecil's smoking on the cover, and he's smoking on the record too – really cooking things up in the best old school soul jazz style of his Muse Records years! The album was recorded live in New Jersey, and it's proof that plenty of great jazz was still coming from west of the Hudson in the early 90s – a time not nearly as documented as earlier years on the Jersey scene, but still a time of great players and hip local nightspots like the Trumpets club in which the album was recorded. Brooks' tight work on drums is very firmly at the helm of the set, and other players include Antonio Hart on alto, Ravi Coltrane on tenor, Jack Walrath on trumpet, Stephen Scott on piano, and Lonnie Plaxico on bass – working with Cecil in a set that also includes a fair bit of original numbers by the group. Titles include "Gordon's Maze", "Fried Bananas", "And Another Thang", "2AM In The Village", "The Third", and "Montclair". (Out of print.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Hangin' With Smooth
Muse, 1990. Used
The album's hardly the smooth set you might guess from the title – although the rhythms of drummer Cecil Brooks are always plenty darn fluid! There's a rock-solid, no-nonsense approach to the record – the sort that marks not only Brooks' best as a leader, but also the many great ... CD
Our Mister Brooks
32 Jazz/Muse, Late 80s/Early 90s. Used
Some great work from the second wave of Muse Records soul jazz – sessions recorded in the late 80s and early 90s by young lion drummer Cecil Brooks – and featuring a host of great sidemen from his generation, including Greg Osby, Geri Allen, Lonnie Plaxico, Benny Green, Phillip Harper, ... CD
Live At Sweet Basil Vol. 2
Savant, 2002. Used
Drummer Cecil Brooks III leads a tight New York soul jazz combo through a set of tracks that remind us a lot of his strong work for Muse Records in years past. The group features Don Braden on tenor and John Hicks on piano – and Hicks gets a fair bit of space to work out on a few of the ... CD
Neck Peckin' Jammie
Muse, 1993. Used
We're not sure what a neck-peckin jammie is, but drummer Cecil Brooks really makes us want to know more – as the sound of this set is solidly soulful, and way deeper than you might guess from the cartoony image on the cover! Brooks has some very sharp help here in the group – Craig ... CD
Impulse/MCA, 1961. Used
One of the all-time classics of early 60s mainstream jazz – and a beautiful record that showcases writing and arranging talents of Oliver Nelson! Nelson had been bumping around a variety of sessions before this one – as a leader, sideman, and arranger – but it was with this album ... CD
Great Scott (Muse)
Muse, 1991. Used
A later set from Shirley Scott, but one that's recorded with an old school lineup that includes Art Harper on bass and Mickey Roker on drums – plus some guest tenor work from the mighty Buck Hill! The tunes are a lot more open and fluid than Scott's sound on Prestige in the 60s – with ... CD

Prestige/ZYX (Germany), 1966. Used
A great set of soul jazz from McPherson – recorded live, with a rolling groove that's in the Blue Note mode of the mid 60s – but even more open overall! The group's got a lot of hometown talent from McPherson's native Detroit – including Barry Harris on piano, Lonnie Hillyer on ... CD
Cause & Effect
Muse, 1991. Used

Lawrence Of Newark
Perception/Sequel (UK), 1973. Used
Incredible stuff from the jazz underground of Newark! This is one of the rarest albums ever recorded by jazz organist Larry Young – cut for the tiny Perception label during the early 70s, and featuring some of the cream of the New Jersey jazz underground. The album's got playing that ... CD
Love & Understanding
Muse/Xanadu, 1973. Used
An overlooked session from Jimmy Heath – and a perfect illustration of his mighty powers in the 70s! At some level, the record's an extension of the hip soul jazz Jimmy was cutting back in the 60s – particularly on his later work as a sideman for bigger players – but at another ... CD
