Scott Joplin – Interpretations 76

LP (Item 525532) Flying Dutchman, 1976 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold

...

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Epic, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Excellent early work from pianist Mike Wofford – a player who'd show up more strongly in the 70s, but who's already in great form here in this early 60s session! The album's quite unique – not the mainstream piano trio material that you'd expect from a major label at the time, and more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mike Wofford

Summer Night
Milestone, 1967. Near Mint-
Early work by genius pianist Mike Wofford – moody and introspective, clearly inspired by Bill Evans, but also with an open feel that really sets the pace for changes in 70s jazz piano. The group on the set is a trio – with Monty Budwig on bass and John Guerin on drums – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Larry Coryell

Fairyland
Flying Dutchman/Mega, 1971. Near Mint-
One of the loosest, most open albums from the early years of guitarist Larry Coryell – and a set that maybe has him pointing even more strongly foward in a jazz direction than some of his earlier, more rock-influenced work! The album's a live date, recorded at the Montreux jazz festival ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gato Barbieri

Under Fire
Flying Dutchman, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
An excellent set from the great Gato Barbieri – one of the gems from his earlier years on record, and an album that's very much in the best spirit of his sides for Impulse in the early 70s! There' definitely some Latin currents in the rhythm – not as strongly stated as on his Latin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oliver Nelson

Dream Deferred
Flying Dutchman, 1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Oliver Nelson was one of the guiding forces behind the great jazz funk Flying Dutchman label of the early 70's, but his work always seems to get eclipsed by the label's hipper artists, like Gil Scott-Heron and Lonnie Liston Smith. This set, though, brings Nelson's best work for the label into ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Gordon & His Jazznpops Band

Hog Fat
Flying Dutchman, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
A pretty cool little record – one of those early messed-up albums on the Flying Dutchman label, cut when the company was saying "f this" to concepts of genre, and throwing together a lot of strange elements in the course of a single record. Drummer Gordon leads a group that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Flying Dutchman, 1976. Near Mint-
A really sharp-edged set from reedman Steve Marcus – a player who'd already had some pretty tight fusion records under his belt before this overlooked gem! Marcus was a saxophonist who was always experimenting with new ideas at this time – part of a generation raised on rock as much as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chico Hamilton

El Exigente
Flying Dutchman, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold
Great work from a fantastic period of drummer Chico Hamilton – a time when he'd moved way past the chamber jazz of his 50s years, and even some of his more freewheeling 60s modes on Impulse Records! Here, Chico seems really obsessed with rhythm – to a level where he's not afraid to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Coles

Little Johnny C
Blue Note, 1963. Near Mint-
A rare session as a leader from trumpeter Johnny Coles – a player who cut some great work in the groups of James Moody and Gil Evans, but who shines even more brightly on this classic Blue Note album! Coles really has an ear for finding the hippest side of his instrument – and he blows ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

Dizzy In Greece
Verve, 1956. Near Mint-
Dizzy's in Greece, looking very cool in a fez on the cover – and really wailing hard with a larger group that includes Billy Mitchell, Charlie Persip, Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly, and Phil Woods! The mode here is still quite boppish, despite the larger size of the ensemble – but Dizzy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elvin Jones & Richard Davis

Heavy Sounds
Impulse, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
Heavy Sounds, indeed – a beautiful little set of dark-edged soul jazz from the mid 60s – co-led by bassist Richard Davis and drummer Elvin Jones! The sound here is a bit different than any work ever released by either player as a leader – and is almost more in the vein of Blue ... LP, Vinyl record album
