❔

A sweet trio set from bassist Ron Carter – done with great piano from Kenny Barron and guitar from Herb Ellis – a really sensitive pair who make things swing gently with Carter throughout! Ron's warm basslines really direct the set strongly – and the lean recording style gives his careful notes plenty of space in the spotlight – really underscoring the lyrically brilliance of Barron and Ellis, who deliver a lot more here together than we might expect! Titles include "Blues For DP", "Summertime", "Quiet Times", "For Toddlers Only", "Sweet Lorraine", and "Airegin".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Transition/Blue Note (Japan), 1955. Used
A wailer! This rare 1955 album is one of Donald Byrd's first records as a leader – recorded for the tiny Transition label in Boston, but with a hardbop groove that's right up there with his early work for Savoy and Blue Note. The record is practically a Jazz Messengers session – as it ... CD

Bobby Hutcherson

Live At Montreux
Blue Note (Japan), 1974. Used
One of the most wonderful 70s albums from Bobby Hutcherson – and one of the most deeply spiritual, too! As with others in Blue Note's Montreux series, the tracks are long and very open – with a different flavor than the artists' studio work. Hutcherson works with a hip small group ... CD

Horace Silver

Silver 'N Brass
Blue Note (Japan), 1975. Used
A beautifully soulful set from Horace Silver – hardly the "with brass" session you might guess from the title, and instead a well-integrated album that really showcases a new level of arranging genius from Horace! The set is heavy on hip horns – with work from Oscar Brashear, ... CD

Andrew Hill

Judgment!
Blue Note, Mid 60s. Used

Dexter Gordon

GO
Blue Note, 1962. Used
Seminal stuff – and one of Dexter Gordon's excellent Blue Note sessions with pianist Sonny Clark! Sonny's in fine fine form for the record, and in our opinion, he seems to be the most relaxed and inventive when accompanying Dexter Gordon – even over other Blue Note horn players, and ... CD

Ahmad Jamal

Freeflight
Impulse, 1972. Used
Brilliant work by Jamal – and one of his first albums to feature electric piano! The mode of the tracks is in that "stretching out" style he was using as the 60s came to a close – a bit inspired by McCoy Tyner, but more an exploration of the lyricism of his earlier work, set ... CD
