We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mambo With Tjader
Fantasy, 1954. Very Good+
Early Latin from the great Cal Tjader – proof that he had a wonderful ear for this sort of a groove, even when he was just getting started! The album's a killer batch of jazzy mambos all the way through – served up with hard-edged vibes from Cal, all nicely chromatic in tone – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Merl Saunders
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good
We have to admit we've always been somewhat dismissive of Merl Saunders 70s records, perhaps because of the hippy association we have with these bay area recordings. But ultimately there's at least a little bit of funk peeking through on any of his Fantasy recordings, which gets a nice helping ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy, 1957. Very Good-
A real standout session from Cal Tjader – a straight jazz side from the late 50s, recorded with a hip group that includes Vince Guaraldi on piano, Gene Wright on bass, and Al Torre on drums. Although Cal's possibly better-remembered for his Latin work of the time, the record is a good ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ritmo Caliente!
Fantasy, 1955. Very Good+
One of Cal Tjader's first Latin-tinged sessions for Fantasy Records – and a really wonderful batch of tracks recorded with a shifting array of very hip players! In addition to Cal's vibes, and expected Latin percussion – handled by Armando Peraza on congas and bongos – the set ... LP, Vinyl record album

Make It Count
Fantasy, 1980. Very Good+
Every bit a soul record as it is a jazz one – and a nice little soul record at that! Idris is working here in a smooth jazzy fusion mode – a style that's quite different from his funky jazz work at the start of the 70s, but which comes off very nicely here thanks to some superb Fantasy ... Upendo Ni Pamoja
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+
Sublime electric work from Ramsey Lewis! Ramsey's working here with his hip 70s group that included Morris Jennings and Cleveland Eaton, and he's playing some fantastic electric piano – a blend of funky grooves and soulful spiritualism, stripped down into a sound that's one of his leanest ... Lord Of Lords
Impulse, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
Beautifully high concept work from Alice Coltrane – the kind of record you'd use to announce the arrival of a new king – or lord, for that matter!
