Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

John Zorn

Spillane
Elektra/Nonesuch, 1987. Used
One of our favorite Zorn "tribute" albums from the 80s – in this case a set of long pastiche tracks that pays hommage to pulp writer Mickey Spillane, Albert Collins, and the film Forbidden Fruit. The track "Spillane" is the best – a side-long number that features ... CD

World Saxophone Quartet

Rhythm & Blues
Elektra, 1988. Used
Bold, brilliant horns from David Murray, Hamiet Bluiett, Julius Hemphill, and Oliver Lake – on unusual versions of tunes that include "Let's Get It On", "For The Love Of Money", "Nemesis", "Night Train", "Messin With The Kid", and "Dock ... CD

Jimmy Smith

Off The Top
Elektra, 1982. Used
A lean little set from Jimmy Smith's back to basics years of the early 80s – an album that's recorded in a relatively old school soul jazz mode! Jimmy's mostly playing Hammond here – but also uses a bit of Arp strings at times – and the rest of the group members include George ... CD

Bud Powell

Inner Fires
Elektra (Japan), 1953/1982. Used
First-ever issue of material recorded live by Bud in 1953 – during a performance at Club Kavakos in Washington, DC – with a trio that features Charles Mingus on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. The set's from the private collection of Bill Potts, and is reasonably well recorded for the ... CD

Charlie Haden with Gonzalo Rubalcaba

Verve, 2004. Used
Another latin leaning collaboration between bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, who also arranged all the tracks on the album which feature guitar, sax, flute, bongo, and additional percussion. CD

Novus, 1992. Used
Features Ron Carter on bass, Grady Tate on drums, Clark Terry and Greg Gisbert on trumpet, Al Grey on Trombone, Joshua Redman on tenor, and Hicks on piano. CD
CTI, 1974. Used
A great return to form for Chet Baker – his first record in a number of years away from the studio, and proof that his genius could adapt to just about any setting! The album's got a tight focus that's probably one of the keys to its success – a set of arrangements by Don Sebesky that ... CD

Charlie Haden

Hampton Hawes, Cecil McBee, Roy Haynes

Live At The Jazz Showcase In Chicago Vol 1
Enja (Germany), 1981. Used
A hell of a great live set from pianist Hampton Hawes – thanks especially to the other members of the trio! Hawes is at his free, open, 70s best on the piano – but bassist Cecil McBee really takes the record to the next level – spinning out these amazing lines that are as ... CD

Charles Mingus

Pre Bird
Mercury, 1960. Used
An unusual chapter in the label-hopping career of Charles Mingus – a one-off date recorded for Mercury right after Mingus' legendary sessions for Columbia! The format here may well be Mingus' most ambitious to date – as the album features larger groups than before, exploring a range of ... CD
