We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mercury, 1977. Near Mint- (pic cover)
2 tracks off their Secrets album that really helped put them over, with a slick commercial funk sound filled with pop bass and cascading horn lines. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Sugar Hill, 1982. Near Mint-
A killer single from Trouble Funk, on Sugar Hill, with the band's trade mark percussive riffing, and as you'd expect from go go, loads of nice fills and breakdowns all centered around a fat rolling bass pedal groove. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Atlantic/Atco, 1978. Very Good+
Ahhhhhhhhhh . . . Freak Out! What can we say? The cut's a monster – silly to be sure, but still with a choppy dancefloor groove that gets 'em every time! Nile Rogers, if you'd only stuck to guitar riffing like this, you'd have become President! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Elektra, 1979. Very Good+
A sweet funky club track, with a great jazzy style that reminds us a lot of work at the time by Don Blackman or Bernard Wright! The cut's got a groove that sort of mixes P-Funk and early 80s groove – with some very nice keyboards and riffing guitars, topped off by some wonderfully sweet ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Total Experience, 1982. Very Good-
An 80s groove classic! "Outstanding" has some wonderful funky grooves and a killer 80s sound that's complete with very fat bass pedal grooves, and some tight keyboard work! The hook's a monster, and this rare single offers up 2 versions not on the LP! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Shadybrook, 1977. Near Mint-
Classic 12" version of this one! "Oh Honey" is a killer, with a great spacey soul sound, and a monster sample on the intro. This version is 6 minutes long – a real treat! 12-inch, Vinyl record
20th Century, 1977. Very Good+
A funky funky thumper from Barry White – and one of his last truly genius tracks! "Ecstasy" is presented here in a long long version that lets the tune's initial bass and drum interplay stretch out magnificently – sliding and slinking along in a classic White-styled groove, ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
TK, 1979. Near Mint-
What can we say? "Ring My Bell" was one of the biggest crossover disco tracks of the late 70s – with a cool electronic groove on the beat, and lyrics and production by Frederick Knight, making the southern soul singer one of the more unlikely disco forces of the time. This 12" ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Salsoul, 1976. Near Mint-
What a tune – one of our favorite Salsoul tracks ever! "Spring Rain" is a magical blend of strings, beats, and this soaring piano – all coming together in a lush groove that never quits, peppered with some sweet female chorus vocals that never sound cheesy! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Casablanca, 1980. Very Good+
Great late funky material from Parliament oof the Trombonipulation album! Although the date of the single is quite old, "Agony Of Defeat" is an excellent funky track, with a strident soulful groove – and a sound that's very similar to Funkadelic's "Not Just Knee Deep", ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
