❔

Philip Bailey hits a great groove here – working with Nile Rodgers, who gives him a lean, clean sound that works perfectly with his vocals! The sound is a nice change from the direction Bailey was heading in previously – a return to the focused soul of the later Earth Wind & Fire years, with his amazing lead opening up in ways that few other singers can match. Tunes are pretty well-penned too – catchy, but never cloyingly commercial – and titles include "State Of The Heart", "Welcome To The Club", "Special Effect", "Because Of You", "Take This With You", "The Day Will Come", "Back It Up", and "Echo My Heart".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Emotions

Rejoice
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+
A huge hit for both The Emotions and Maurice White – whose Kalimba Productions handled this album in the same hit mode they'd been using for Earth Wind & Fire! There's a polished, soaring bounce her that definitely shows the Earth Wind & Fire touch – and which takes the girls ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Mid 70s/1981. Very Good+
Bill Withers' second "best of" collection for Columbia – and like the other one, this set features tracks from his earlier years at Sussex, plus some numbers cut for Columbia. Great stuff throughout – from the more recent smooth mellow soul of "Just The Two Of Us" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ 2LP + 12"
A huge disco cash-in moment of the 70s – but a great one too, and a strong illustration of the power that Casablanca Records had in both the clubs and charts at the time! The movie and record were both a bit over-pressed upon release, but they nonetheless stand as a great snapshot of the way ... LP, Vinyl record album

Earth Wind & Fire

Spirit
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+
A big hit for the group – and a great album of smooth funky soul! Spirit is a perfect example of the way that Earth Wind & Fire could tighten things up, yet still keep them real – holding onto the deeply spiritual side that first made them great – but also focusing their ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rebbie Jackson

Centipede
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint-
A great set from Rebbie Jackson – a batch of 80s groovers that's way different than work from siblings Michael or Janet – and done with a percolating sort of vibe that's quite different from some of the core projects of the rest of the Jacksons universe! Wayne Henderson handled most of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1986. Near Mint-

Romantically Yours
Columbia, 1985. Near Mint-
A unique posthumous release from Marvin Gaye – one that focuses mostly on his talents with ballads and standards, and which stands in stark contrast to some of his more sex-heavy work of the 80s! All of the material predates the 1985 release of the record – and some appears to be from ... LP, Vinyl record album

T Neck/Columbia, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
A funky album – but one that we love best for the mellow tracks! Sure, the Isleys could wear flashy suits and play some heavy guitar – but honestly, what we really love them for here are the laidback, loving tunes they do so well. The album includes 2 of their greatest ballad tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album
People, 1973. Near Mint-
An incredible album – a landmark piece of funk that nobody should be without, funk fan or not!
