Inside Out

LP (Item 521834) Columbia, 1986 — Condition: Sealed

Philip Bailey hits a great groove here – working with Nile Rodgers, who gives him a lean, clean sound that works perfectly with his vocals! The sound is a nice change from the direction Bailey was heading in previously – a return to the focused soul of the later Earth Wind & Fire years, with his amazing lead opening up in ways that few other singers can match. Tunes are pretty well-penned too – catchy, but never cloyingly commercial – and titles include "State Of The Heart", "Welcome To The Club", "Special Effect", "Because Of You", "Take This With You", "The Day Will Come", "Back It Up", and "Echo My Heart".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Philip Bailey

Chinese Wall
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint-
A big breakthrough for Philip Bailey – and a record that was kind of a second-level explosion for the Earth Wind & Fire sound in the 80s! There's a definite crossover feel to the record – a style that takes Bailey's soulful vocals, and mixes them with lots of catchy hooks – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sweet Apple

Sweet Apple
Columbia, Early 70s. Near Mint-
A bit funk, a bit rock, and a bit soul – Sweet Apple proudly followed in the tradition of similar Columbia acts like Sly & The Family Stone or The Chambers Brothers, although they never lasted long enough to get the fame of either of those groups. Most tracks have vocals, which are ... LP, Vinyl record album

Earth Wind & Fire

Gratitude
Columbia, 1975. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Great stuff! Although a live album, Gratitude is one of Earth Wind & Fire's greatest from the mid 70s – a very tight batch of grooves that proves that Maurice White & Co. could play just as well on stage as they could in the studio – and the noise of the crowd going wild is ... Columbia, Mid 70s/1981. Very Good+
Bill Withers' second "best of" collection for Columbia – and like the other one, this set features tracks from his earlier years at Sussex, plus some numbers cut for Columbia. Great stuff throughout – from the more recent smooth mellow soul of "Just The Two Of Us" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chambers Brothers

New Time – A New Day
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good
This one has the Chambers working in a number of styles, sweating hard in a gritty version of Otis Redding's "I Can't Turn You Loose" and to some funky percussion and call-and-response vocals on "Do Your Thing", and grooving softly on "Guess Who" and others. Other ... LP, Vinyl record album

Boz Scaggs

My Time
Columbia, 1972. Very Good
Boz Scaggs at the height of his early powers – still very much in the best blue-eyed soul style that first got him noticed by CBS, but also working with a stronger, richer, prouder sound that's really great! A number of the tracks on the set were recorded in Muscle Shoals, with superb small ... LP, Vinyl record album

Esther Marrow

Sister Woman
Fantasy, 1972. Near Mint-
Very righteous work from Esther Marrow – a soul sister who sings with a hell of a lot of power! The set's an overlooked gem in the Fantasy catalog of the 70s, and it's one of only two secular soul albums cut by Marrow – and quite possibly the best of the bunch, too! Esther's got some ... A 70s soul classic – and the closest that Gil Scott-Heron ever came to having a hit!
