Clifford Jordan & John Gilmore — Blowing In From Chicago (SHMCD pressing) ... CD 17.99
A landmark session that features two of the greatest tenor talents to emerge from the rich Chicago scene of the 50s – both working head to head here in a fantastic early showcase for Blue Note! The set's less of the "blowing session" promised in the title – at least in comparison to some of those dates on Prestige Records at the time – and although Clifford Jordan was already a rising star, getting attention on the east coast – the album's maybe even more noteworthy for the presence of John Gilmore – making a rare appearance here away from the Sun Ra Arkestra, where he spent most of his career! Both players are wonderful – and the album features the duo in a twin-tenor frontline, with backing by Horace Silver on piano, Curley Russell on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – a perfect Blue Note rhythm trio, who really send the whole thing home. Titles include "Evil Eye", "Status Quo", "Bo-Till", and "Blue Lights". CD features the bonus track "Let It Stand".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Horace Silver

Silver 'N Voices
Blue Note (Japan), 1976. Used
A beautiful, beautiful record from Horace Silver – one of his great 70s experiments for Blue Note – and a set that has him working in the same "jazz with voices" mode explored by Max Roach and Donald Byrd in earlier years! The core of the set is focused around the great work ... CD

Blue Note, 1960. Used
A partner album of sorts to Jimmy Smith's classic Midnight Special album – recorded during the same sessions as that one, and also featuring Stanley Turrentine on tenor and Kenny Burrell on guitar! The sound here is almost even more open and stretched out – with only 4 long tracks on ... CD

Charles Mingus with Eric Dolphy

Cornell 1964
Blue Note, 1964. Used 2 CDs
A real musical discovery – not just for the fact that the CD represents a previously-unreleased concert by Charlies Mingus – but also because the sounds and styles here offer up a version of Mingus that's almost more adventurous than some of his other albums of the time! The sextet ... CD
Blue Note, 1964. Used

Blue Note, 1967/1969. Used
Lost genius from trumpeter Lee Morgan – a session recorded for Blue Note in 1967, but not issued until the late 70s – and even then, only for a very short time! The session has Morgan moving into that wonderful last stage of his career – working in tight formation towards a sound ... CD

Art Blakey & The Afro-Drum Ensemble

African Beat
Blue Note, 1962. Used
A completely righteous mix of jazz and African percussion – put together by drummer Art Blakey at a time when he was riding high with the Jazz Messengers, but also was willing to work on great experiments like this! The album's years ahead of its time – and arguably opens the door for ... CD

Jimmy McGriff Big Band

Big Band – A Tribute To Basie
Solid State/Blue Note, 1966. Used
A Basie tribute, but a really smoking one – thanks to some hard swinging arrangements from Manny Albam, and plenty of heavy Hammond from the great Jimmy McGriff! The tracks are mostly numbers from the Count Basie songbook of the 50s and 60s, but they're strongly reworked here with a swinging ... CD

Wes Montgomery

Road Song
A&M (Japan), 1968. Used
Beautifully lofty work from the great Wes Montgomery – a set that was recorded quite late in his too-short career, and really points the way towards some of the sophisticated sounds that might have followed, had Wes not left this planet all too soon! Don Sebesky is at the head of the charts ... CD
