Montuno Sessions

LP (Item 5213) Mr Bongo (UK), Late 80s — Condition: Near Mint-
First-ever issue of this great session of unreleased Latin material from the mid-80s, in which Charlie Palmieri leads a host of great Latin players – like Henry Fiol and Jimmy Sabater – through a bunch of hard jazzy material. The recording quality is excellent, and the production keeps the sound hard and driving – a great album of no-nonsense Latin jazz, and essential for any fan of the music.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(A nice copy!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jack Costanzo

Mr Bongo
Clarion, Early 60s. Very Good+
A rare bit of Latin jazz from this mighty percussionist – the man also known to the world as Mr Bongo! The date's Jack's only one for Atlantic Records – and the cuts are short, hard, and fast, with Jack's nimble hands on the bongo highlighted on most cuts, with tight backing behind, ... Fania All-Stars

Spanish Fever
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+
A fresh new groove from The Fania All Stars – one that definitely has them picking up some of the Spanish elements mentioned in the title – the fusing them into the tight mix of Latin, club, and jazz they were doing at Columbia Records in the late 70s! These new elements are often ... LP, Vinyl record album

Willie Rodriguez

Bunch Of Bongos
Grand Award, 1960. Very Good
A driving session of big band Latin, with some really nice moments, and some particularly strong percussion on the best tracks. According to the notes, Ray Barretto and Johnny Pacheco are on the album – but we don't see enough evidence to totally believe that. Titles include "Mambo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Grant Green

Alive!
Blue Note, 1970. Sealed
A really fantastic album from guitarist Grant Green – a set that's every bit as great as his other Blue Note funk albums from the time – but in a very different way! Ellen McIlwaine

Ellen McIlwaine
20th Century, 1978. Near Mint-
Although Ellen McIlwaine's always best-remembered for her folksy work on Polydor, she's also pretty darn nice on this kind of record – a sophisticated soulful outing that shows that she sould still really thrive as an artist in a more commercial environment. The best cuts are the mellower ... LP, Vinyl record album

Doug Carn

Infant Eyes
Black Jazz, 1971. Sealed
An undisputed 70s soul jazz classic – and arguably the best album that Doug Carn ever cut for the Black Jazz label!
