We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bahiana
Pablo, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A beautifully mellow set of funky grooves, played by Diz with a west coast group that includes Roger Glenn on flute, Mickey Roker on drums, and Michael Howell on guitars – very similar to Dizzy's excellent Portrait Of Jenny album on Perception. Verve, 1959. Very Good-
Diz breaks past his bop playing, takes a bit of a turn towards swing-based material, and also hits this nice rolling groove that gives a bit of a peek at the way he'd sound in the 60's, when he had Lalo Schifrin on piano, and more of a Latin sound. He's backed here by Junior Mance on piano, Les ... LP, Vinyl record album

New Wave
Philips, 1962. Very Good
A lost bossa jazz classic from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded at a time when Lalo Schifrin was working in his combo! The record's got a cool, laidback kind of groove – one that's miles away from Gillespie's earlier bop work, and which shows him opening up his rhythmic conception strongly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Savoy, Late 40s/Early 50s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Howard McGhee had a bit of a checkered recording career over the years, but the material he cut for Savoy was some of his strongest – and showed the bop trumpter as one of the more innovative players of his generation, willing to experiment with more interesting arrangements and styles than ... No Count
Savoy, 1956. Very Good+
The title's an in joke that you'd get easily if you were a mainstream listener at the time – as the group here features members of Basie's mid 50s group, all playing in small combo formation without the Count! The lineup features two saxes – Foster and Wess – plus two trombones, ... LP, Vinyl record album
