Big Time

LP (Item 519541) Tamla, 1977 — Condition: Sealed
Originally: 8.99
A Smokey Robinson soundtrack to a film that's scarcely remembered – but Smokey's songs are great, his singing passionate and soulful, and the songs work well in a number of soul modes! Some of the material approaches a rave up gospel soul mode, with church ready organs and chorus vocals – plus a four great songs with Smokey on lead vocals such as the stellar "Hip Trip", plus "So Nice To Be With You", "Theme From Big Time" and "If We're Gonna Act Like Lovers". Other tracks include "JJ's Theme", "The Agony And The Ecstasy" and more.  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed 70s pressing! Cover has a cut corner, and shrink is slightly open in that corner.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Smokey Robinson

Smokey's Family Robinson
Tamla, 1976. Sealed
Smokey's Family Robinson finds Smokey exploring rather than simply setting out to continue riding the waves made by Quiet Storm. There's bits of dancefloor funk, pared down keyboard soul, spacey jams and a sweet ballad or two – all with Smokey's soul strirring vocals in peak form. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stevie Wonder

Songs In The Key Of Life
Tamla, 1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A sweet little double LP – one that had some folks saying that Stevie should have stayed away from the "2LP syndrome", but for us a real treasure with lots of hidden gems. Besides the hits "Isn't She Lovely" and "Sir Duke", which were more than enough to carry ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvin Gaye

I Want You
Tamla, 1976. Very Good
An incredible record – quite possibly our favorite ever by Marvin Gaye! The album is quite unique – written by Leon Ware, and recorded in collaboration with him – done as a "suite" of tracks based on themes of passion, joy, and new love – all of which were very ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvelettes

Marvelettes
Tamla, 1967. Very Good+
Classic stuff from the girls who emerged to become one of Motown's best groups of the late 60s years. The set features the group's great version of "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game", still a big cut on the Chi-town steppers scene – plus a number of other covers and lesser ... Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Time Out
Tamla, 1969. Very Good+
Kind of a mixed bag of numbers from Smokey and the group – who are clearly searching around here for a new sound that will take them into the 70s, working in a number of different modes – all of them still pretty nice, thanks to the always-great vocal talents of the group. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Spice Of Life
Mercury, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Perhaps the greatest record Jerry Butler made in the 70s, and a very tight bit of baroque Chicago soul with arrangements and production by Samuel F. Brown III. The tracks are a good mix of originals and covers, and they all show Jerry going way past his Gamble & Huff/Mercury years – into ... LP, Vinyl record album

Temptations

Anthology
Motown, Mid 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+ 3LP Trifold
Features 3LPs worth of Temptations classics, with tracks recorded between 1964 and 1972. The album follows the group right up to their move to ABC, and includes classics like "Cloud Nine", "Just My Imagination", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", "Ain't Too Proud To ... LP, Vinyl record album

Friends Of Distinction

Whatever
RCA, 1970. Very Good+
Some nice little groovers from the enigmatic Friends Of Distinction – and a record recorded right after their big "Grazin In The Grass" fame. The album features lots of cool arrangements from Jerry Peters – whose handling of the group pushed them past a simple pop-soul vocal ... LP, Vinyl record album

Diana Ross

Greatest Hits
Motown, 1970s. Very Good+
A nice collection of some Diana's great early 70s work for Motown, when she really stepped out and established herself as one of the finest soul singers of the decade. 10 tracks in all: "Touch Me In The Morning", "Love Hangover", "Last Time I Saw Him", "I ... LP, Vinyl record album

Average White Band

Warmer Communications
Atlantic, 1978. Very Good+
In case you don't get the joke, the title's a play on the fact that Atlantic Records had just been acquired by Warner Communications – now fully a major label at the end of the 70s! That fact doesn't stop the album from being a good one, though – and AWB work here with Arif Mardin on a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sue, 1963. Very Good+
Baby Washington had one of the best soul voices of the late 60s, with a sweet little girl style that was never cloying, but always kind of innocent and pretty. This classic album for Sue includes, of course, "That's How Heartaches Are Made", one of those beautiful cuts that still ... LP, Vinyl record album

Konrad Elfers

Funeral in Berlin
RCA, 1967. Near Mint-
One of the grooviest Michael Caine spy films of the 60s – given an equally groovy soundtrack by Konrad Elfers! We don't know Elfers from other work of the time, but this album's a real standout – not the usual spy sort of work, although still with some great jazzy touches at times ...
